Identification of a ceRNA Network Driven by Copy Number Variations in Esophageal Cancer
CONCLUSIONS: This study identified 11 CNV-driven lncRNAs that might affect EC development, 2 of which have promising effects if applied to drug treatment. These findings might assist in identifying novel treatments for EC.PMID:38246614 | DOI:10.1272/jnms.JNMS.2023_90-611 (Source: Journal of Nippon Medical School)

Opioid-Related Respiratory Depression in Non-Cancer Patients, as Reported in the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report Database
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that elderly CNCP patients should be closely monitored after the start of opioid treatment, especially during the first week and, if possible, for 1 month, even if starting doses are within ranges recommended by the manufacturer and guidelines.PMID:38246615 | DOI:10.1272/jnms.JNMS.2023_90-612 (Source: Journal of Nippon Medical School)

Active Tuberculosis in a Patient Receiving Adalimumab for Psoriatic Arthritis and Chemoprophylaxis for Latent Tuberculosis Infection
We report a rare case of active tuberculosis despite chemoprophylaxis for LTBI in a patient receiving adalimumab for PsA. A 60-year-old Japanese woman who had received a diagnosis of psoriasis at age 35 years presented with arthralgia of the right hand, which she first noticed 2 months previously. Physical examination showed scattered erythematous papules and plaques with scales on her trunk, extremities, and scalp. Her right metacarpophalangeal and proximal interphalangeal joints were swollen and painful, and her right wrist and elbow were painful. PsA was diagnosed and adalimumab was initiated. Because an interferon-γ r...

Human adipose tissue-derived stem cells inhibit coronary artery vasculitis in a mouse model of Kawasaki disease
CONCLUSIONS: The present experimental results indicate that hADSCs have an early anti-inflammatory effect, and that Gal-1 may be involved in preventing inflammation and reducing tissue damage.PMID:38233123 | DOI:10.1272/jnms.JNMS.2024_91-212 (Source: Journal of Nippon Medical School)

Clinicopathological characteristics of everolimus-associated interstitial lung disease: A single-center consecutive analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Everolimus-associated ILD is mild and has a favorable prognosis. Patients with symptomatic ILD were more likely to have higher SP-D levels than those with asymptomatic ILD. Granulomatous lesions are an important pathological feature of everolimus-associated ILD.PMID:38233124 | DOI:10.1272/jnms.JNMS.2024_91-211 (Source: Journal of Nippon Medical School)

Changes in metamorphopsia in patients undergoing treatment for vitreoretinal disorders
CONCLUSION: This quantitative study indicated that metamorphopsia is present in most patients undergoing surgery for vitreoretinal diseases and is most severe in ERM. In these patients, vitrectomy improved visual acuity but not metamorphopsia.PMID:38233125 | DOI:10.1272/jnms.JNMS.2024_91-114 (Source: Journal of Nippon Medical School)

Smoking-related interstitial fibrosis and Smoker's macrophages
J Nippon Med Sch. 2024 Jan 16. doi: 10.1272/jnms.JNMS.2024_91-113. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSmoking-related interstitial lung diseases (SRILDs) are a group of heterogeneous diffuse pulmonary parenchymal diseases associated with tobacco exposure. Smoking-related interstitial fibrosis (SRIF) is relatively recent, a pathologically defined form of SRILDs. SRIF is characterized by the accumulation of macrophages in the alveolar spaces, which is associated with interstitial inflammation and fibrosis. The macrophages frequently contain light brown pigment and are called 'smoker' s macrophages'. Patients with SRIF who have cl...

Current status of robotic hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery
J Nippon Med Sch. 2024 Jan 16. doi: 10.1272/jnms.JNMS.2024_91-109. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLaparoscopic surgery is performed worldwide and has clear economic and social benefits in terms of patient recovery time. It is used for most gastrointestinal surgical procedures, but laparoscopic surgery for more complex procedures in the esophageal, hepatobiliary, and pancreatic regions remains challenging. Minimally invasive surgery that results in accurate tumor dissection is vital in surgical oncology, and development of surgical systems and instruments plays a key role in assisting surgeons to achieve this. A notable adva...
