Further investigation of the lateral approach for the resection of Knosp grade 4 pituitary adenomas in endoscopic endonasal surgery
CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed that the LCCS is divided by the AIC into the superolateral and inferolateral compartments, avoiding the misconception that the LCCS has vertical communication. Therefore, the lateral approach was subclassified into the LS approach and the AI approach for the resection of KG4PAs, which allowed a high gross-total resection rate with acceptable safety in the surgical treatment of KG4PAs.PMID:38364227 | DOI:10.3171/2023.12.JNS23922 (Source: Journal of Neurosurgery)

Association of socioeconomic status with the management outcome of unruptured intracranial arteriovenous malformation
CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed that relatively disadvantaged patients with unruptured bAVMs are more likely to experience nonindependent outcomes at the last follow-up, after adjusting for confounding variables. An emphasis on social support may be beneficial for patients with a lower SES.PMID:38364232 | DOI:10.3171/2023.12.JNS232082 (Source: Journal of Neurosurgery)

The relevance of biologically effective dose for pain relief and sensory dysfunction after Gamma Knife radiosurgery for trigeminal neuralgia: an 871-patient multicenter study
CONCLUSIONS: BED and physical dose were both predictive of pain relief and could be used as treatment planning goals for distal and proximal targets, respectively, while considering maximum brainstem point dose < 29.5 Gy as a potential constraint for bothersome numbness.PMID:38364220 | DOI:10.3171/2023.12.JNS231569 (Source: Journal of Neurosurgery)

Short-term changes in the physiology of the primary motor cortex following head impact exposure during a Canadian football game
CONCLUSIONS: Athletes exposed to subconcussive hits associated with Canadian football exhibit abnormal M1 corticomotor inhibition function, particularly when the recorded impact magnitude was ≥ 40g. Given the deleterious effects of decreased inhibition on motor control and balance, systematically tracking head impact forces at each game and practice with contacts could prove useful for injury prevention in contact sports.PMID:38364223 | DOI:10.3171/2023.11.JNS231933 (Source: Journal of Neurosurgery)

The vectorial technique: a novel neuronavigation-based tool to measure angles of exposure during skull base dissections
J Neurosurg. 2024 Feb 16:1-6. doi: 10.3171/2023.12.JNS232709. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe angle of exposure (AnE) represents a metric that is particularly useful for analyzing circular bony structures during skull base dissections. The authors aimed to develop and validate a neuronavigation-based method to measure the AnE. A formula based on vectorial geometry and the coordinates of three points collected with a neuronavigation system was developed to measure the AnE. The method was validated using a plexiglass phantom head. To demonstrate its applicability, the authors measured the AnE in 6 cadaveric specimens after...
