Donor-transmitted cystinuria in a renal transplant recipient
We present a case of acquired cystinuria in a renal transplant recipient, that is, to the best of our knowledge, the first case of acquired cystinuria ever documented in the literature.PMID:38512367 | DOI:10.1007/s40620-023-01877-5 (Source: Journal of Nephrology)

The predictive value of systemic inflammatory markers in 902 patients with tunneled hemodialysis catheter
CONCLUSION: This study highlights the interest of specific inflammatory markers, particularly monocytes, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio, and platelet-lymphocyte ratio, in the management of tunneled catheters, notably in patients undergoing exchanges. However, cut-off values, essential for constructing management algorithms, are currently lacking, and prospective multicenter studies are needed for further elucidation.PMID:38512368 | DOI:10.1007/s40620-023-01880-w (Source: Journal of Nephrology)

Significance of the total renal chronicity score in predicting renal outcome in PLA2R-associated membranous nephropathy
CONCLUSIONS: Renal chronicity is closely associated with renal outcomes in PLA2R-associated membranous nephropathy, and combining the KDIGO risk classification with chronicity scores may provide a more accurate prognostic prediction.PMID:38512370 | DOI:10.1007/s40620-024-01893-z (Source: Journal of Nephrology)

Native nephrectomy in polycystic kidney disease patients on transplant lists: how and when?
J Nephrol. 2024 Mar 21. doi: 10.1007/s40620-024-01899-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAutosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), the most common hereditary kidney disease, accounts for approximately 10% of the patients on kidney transplantation waitlists. High rates of complications including hemorrhage, infections, nephrolithiasis and kidney size-related compressive complaints have been reported among ADPKD patients. Therefore, the need for routine native nephrectomy and timing of such procedure in ADPKD patients being prepared for transplantation are debated. Even though pre-transplant nephrectomy has the pot...

Pathogenic pathways of renal damage in Fabry nephropathy: interplay between immune cell infiltration, apoptosis and fibrosis
CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that CD163+ cells could be relevant mediators of fibrosis in Fabry nephropathy, playing a role in the induction of TGFβ1 and apoptotic cell death by tubular cells. These cells may represent a new player in the pathogenic mechanisms of Fabry nephropathy.PMID:38512375 | DOI:10.1007/s40620-024-01908-9 (Source: Journal of Nephrology)

SNF472: a novel therapeutic agent for vascular calcification and calciphylaxis
J Nephrol. 2024 Mar 21. doi: 10.1007/s40620-024-01909-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVascular calcification is a common complication in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and is strongly associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality. Calciphylaxis is a specific and life-threatening manifestation of vascular calcifications that usually affects individuals with advanced kidney function impairment or those undergoing dialysis. Currently, the treatment of vascular calcification and calciphylaxis in CKD lacks approved treatments and focuses on controlling risk factors. SNF472, the ...

The prognostic values of estimating intraperitoneal pressure in the occurrence of abdominal wall complications  in peritoneal dialysis patients
CONCLUSIONS: We verified the prognostic value of estimation of intraperitoneal pressure by four available equations in predicting abdominal wall complications in our single-center PD cohort. Due to a low diagnostic yield, a novel equation for estimating the intraperitoneal pressure is urgently needed.PMID:38512377 | DOI:10.1007/s40620-024-01913-y (Source: Journal of Nephrology)

Temporal trends in prevalence and disability of chronic kidney disease caused by specific etiologies: an analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019
CONCLUSION: The prevalence and disability burden of CKD caused by specific etiologies show substantial heterogeneity worldwide, highlighting significant disparities in the distribution of CKD. It is crucial to implement geographic and personalized strategies in different regions to alleviate the burden of CKD effectively.PMID:38512378 | DOI:10.1007/s40620-024-01914-x (Source: Journal of Nephrology)

Factors influencing renal replacement therapy modality choice from the nephrologist's perspective
CONCLUSIONS: Based on these interviews, it is apparent that next to already identified singular issues such as late referral, predialysis education, patient mix and financial incentives, more intrinsic factors also impact uptake of home-based therapies. These factors intertwine and relate both to process-level topics and to attitudes and culture of the nephrologists within the team.PMID:38512379 | DOI:10.1007/s40620-024-01915-w (Source: Journal of Nephrology)

Association of mental health-related patient reported outcomes with blood pressure in adults and children with primary proteinuric glomerulopathies
CONCLUSION: Chronically poor psychosocial patient-reported outcomes may be significantly associated with higher BP and hypertension in adults and children with primary proteinuric glomerulopathies. This interaction appears strong in children but should be interpreted with caution, as multiple confounders related to glomerular disease may influence both mental health and BP independently. That said, access to mental health resources may help control BP, and proper disease and BP management may improve overall mental health.PMID:38512380 | DOI:10.1007/s40620-024-01919-6 (Source: Journal of Nephrology)
