Predicting solute transfer rate in patients initiating peritoneal dialysis
CONCLUSIONS: An equation based on simple clinical variables allows ruling out fast transport in a significant proportion of patients initiating PD with a high degree of confidence without requiring dialysate sampling. This could prove useful in guiding dialysis prescription of PD patients in daily clinical practice, particularly in low-resource settings.PMID:38289462 | DOI:10.1007/s40620-023-01862-y (Source: Journal of Nephrology)

Successful wound healing by autologous peripheral blood mononuclear cell therapy in a diabetic patient on hemodialysis with no-option critical limb ischemia: a case report
We report on a limb salvage approach that was successfully employed in a 74-year-old woman on hemodialysis suffering from no-option critical limb ischemia complicated by diabetic foot infection, i.e. otherwise a candidate for major amputation. The approach consists in implanting in the wound bed of the affected limb a concentrate of autologous peripheral blood mononuclear cells collected from the peripheral blood of the patient using a selective filtration separation system. The procedure, performed by a vascular surgeon in an outpatient setting and sterile conditions, was repeated three times at intervals of 15 days, and ...

Blood transfusion reactions and risk of acute kidney injury and major adverse kidney events
CONCLUSION: In our retrospective cohort of patients who received blood product transfusions, 25% experienced transfusion reactions, and this event was associated with a twofold increase in the probability of developing AKI and some of the major adverse kidney events during long follow-up.PMID:38285316 | DOI:10.1007/s40620-023-01859-7 (Source: Journal of Nephrology)

Outcome of atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome: role of triggers and complement abnormalities in the response to C5 inhibition
CONCLUSIONS: Our data show a better outcome in aHUS patients treated with C5-inhibition, particularly in the primary and combined forms, which have a high risk of relapse after discontinuation that is not observed in the secondary and idiopathic forms.PMID:38280096 | DOI:10.1007/s40620-023-01873-9 (Source: Journal of Nephrology)

Sarcopenia diagnosed by ultrasound-assessed quadriceps muscle thickness and handgrip strength predicts mortality in patients on hemodialysis
CONCLUSION: When combined with low handgrip strength, low quadriceps muscle US outperformed low lean tissue index as assessed by bioimpedance spectroscopy in predicting mortality in a cohort of patients on maintenance HD. Ultrasound may be a useful and convenient technique for the assessment of sarcopenia and protein-energy wasting in this patient population.PMID:38263531 | DOI:10.1007/s40620-023-01867-7 (Source: Journal of Nephrology)

Acetazolamide for acute kidney injury in patients undergoing high dose methotrexate therapy: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: This systematic review showed no significant difference between acetazolamide and standard care treatment regarding urine alkalinization time and AKI rate in adult patients receiving high dose methotrexate. We suggest performing a large blinded, randomized, controlled trial to evaluate the potential benefits of this low-cost medication.PMID:38265601 | DOI:10.1007/s40620-023-01850-2 (Source: Journal of Nephrology)

Patient activation and psychological coping strategies to manage challenging circumstances during the COVID-19 pandemic in people with kidney disease
DISCUSSION: Those with higher activation had lower levels of anxiety, and more frequently used adaptive coping strategies during the pandemic. Targeted support and interventions may be required for people with CKD to enhance patient activation, encourage more positive adaptive coping strategies, and mitigate maladaptive coping strategies.PMID:38236468 | DOI:10.1007/s40620-023-01851-1 (Source: Journal of Nephrology)
