Evaluating the renoprotective effects of omega-3-6-9 against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in mice
This study explored the renoprotective potential of omega-3-6-9 when co-administered with cisplatin in a mice model. We divided adult mice into five groups: a control group received 0.5 ml of liquid paraffin; a cisplatin-only group; two groups were treated with low (50 mg/kg) and high (100 mg/kg) doses of omega-3-6-9 plus cisplatin; and a final group received vitamin E before cisplatin administration. The administration of omega-3-6-9 significantly decreased pro-inflammatory modulators and kidney function markers such as TNF-α, IL-1β, blood urea nitrogen, and creatinine, indicating potential renoprotective effects. Our r...

Evaluation of the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect of sublingual glutathione on COPD patients
This study assessed the therapeutic response of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients by measuring oxidative superoxide dismutase (SOD3), glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPX1), and inflammatory biomarkers such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and Interleukin-8 (IL-8) after sublingual administration of glutathione supplements. A cohort of 50 COPD individuals was involved and divided into two groups of 25 each. The first group received conventional therapy involving the administration of formoterol fumarate (12 µg inhaler) twice daily. The second group received the conventional treatment alongside sublingua...

Exploring female medical students' knowledge, attitudes, practices, and perceptions related to breast cancer screening: a scoping review
J Med Life. 2023 Dec;16(12):1732-1739. doi: 10.25122/jml-2023-0412.ABSTRACTEarly detection measures for breast cancer, such as breast self-exams, clinical breast exams, and mammography, have considerable benefits in effectively reducing breast cancer-related mortality. As the incidence of breast cancer is steadily increasing, it is crucial to raise awareness on early detection. This scoping review assessed the current knowledge, attitudes, practices, and perceptions of breast cancer screening among female medical students. We used the six phases of Arksey and O'Malley's framework from the Joanna Briggs Institute Manual and...

Learning style preference and the academic achievements of medical students in an integrated curriculum
J Med Life. 2023 Dec;16(12):1802-1807. doi: 10.25122/jml-2023-0366.ABSTRACTUnderstanding how individuals learn best, known as learning style, is integral to optimizing educational outcomes. This analytical study was conducted among students in their fourth year who finalized their problem-based activities at the College of Medicine, University of Bisha, Saudi Arabia. The visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic (VARK) model was adopted to assess individual differences in learning preferences and their correlation with academic achievement in the problem-based learning (PBL)-dependent curriculum. The online self-administe...

Morphology and thickness of corneal endothelial cells in young Sudanese individuals with myopia
This study aimed to evaluate corneal endothelial cell morphology and central corneal thickness in young individuals with myopia. A prospective study was conducted at Al-Neelain University Eye Hospital between January 2019 and January 2020, including 160 patients with myopia (320 eyes). Data was gathered through clinical assessment of visual acuity, refractive error, and corneal endothelial cells. Results showed that 60% of participants with myopia were female, with a mean age of 21.99±2.8 years and a mean equivalent sphere of -3.19±2.67D. There was a significant difference in endothelial cell degeneration between myopia ...

Efficacy and safety of physical therapy in patients with stage III COPD during ambulatory rehabilitation
This study aimed to determine the efficacy of a combined physical therapy and pharmacological treatment for patients recovering from stage III COPD exacerbation. The efficacy of the rehabilitation program was assessed using anthropological parameters, physical condition, respiratory system function, and functional endurance capacity. Data were collected from 39 patients with stage III COPD who underwent the rehabilitation program. Physical and anthropometric assessments were conducted using the Quetelet Body Mass Index, the Pignet Index, and the Vital Capacity Index (VCI). The functional capacities of the cardiorespiratory...

Azilsartan improves doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity via inhibiting oxidative stress, proinflammatory pathway, and apoptosis
This study investigated whether azilsartan could mitigate doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity. We divided 28 male rats into four groups: the control group receiving a standard diet and water, the vehicle group given DMSO orally for two weeks, doxorubicin group receiving 2.5 mg/kg of doxorubicin three times a week for two weeks, and azilsartan group treated with 5 mg/kg/day of azilsartan orally and doxorubicin. Doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity was evidenced by a significant increase in TNF-α, IL-1β, MDA, and caspase-3 levels and significantly decreased TAC and Bcl-2 levels in the cardiac tissues of treated rats compared ...

Add-on treatment with Cerebrolysin improves clinical symptoms in patients with ALS: results from a prospective, single-center, placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind, phase II study
J Med Life. 2023 Dec;16(12):1750-1755. doi: 10.25122/jml-2023-0459.ABSTRACTAmyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a devastating and progressive neurodegenerative disease with limited treatment options available. Cerebrolysin is a drug candidate for the treatment of ALS because of its neuroprotective and neuroregenerative effects. We initiated a pilot clinical study of a combination of Cerebrolysin and riluzole to assess the therapeutic benefit of Cerebrolysin as an add-on treatment on clinical signs and symptoms in outpatients with ALS. Twenty patients with a clinically definitive diagnosis of ALS were enrolled and randoml...
