Rebastinib attenuates liver injury following cecal ligation and puncture in male mice
J Med Life. 2023 Nov;16(11):1678-1684. doi: 10.25122/jml-2023-0089.ABSTRACTSepsis remains a public health issue with high morbidity and mortality. Liver injury due to sepsis is associated with poor outcomes and an increased risk of death among septic patients. Rebastinib is a small molecule inhibiting the Tie2 receptor and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR2). The current study aimed to reveal the potential protective impact of Rebastinib against sepsis-induced liver injury. Twenty-four adult male mice were allocated into four groups (six per group) as follows: Sham group was exposed to anesthesia and lap...

The effect of vitamin D on adolescents' primary dysmenorrhea
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of vitamin D on adolescents' primary dysmenorrhea and the relationship between Vit. D and adolescents' primary dysmenorrhea. Eighty-five adolescents were included in the current study. After a detailed evaluation, pelvic sonography was performed for all participants to rule out any pelvic pathology. Blood samples were collected to measure thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), prolactin, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1C), and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D). Participants were administered vitamin D (50,000 IU weekly for five months), and their dysmenorrhea symptoms were evaluated before and ...

Epidemiological profile of hemophilia A in Karbala-Iraq
In this study, one-third of patients' presentations started in the first year of life. The most common type was severe hemophilia A (factor VIII activity < 1%). Consequently, more than half of the patients were treated with factor VIII concentrate. Four patients had hepatitis C, while HIV was confirmed in one patient. The epidemiological or clinical parameters of hemophilia A patients in Karbala seem similar to those in other cities in Iraq. By considering this preliminary data, further comprehensive studies for patients with hemophilia and associated complications in other provinces or cities in Iraq are highly suggest...

This study describes the measures instituted at the largest maternity center in the United Arab Emirates during the pandemic to mitigate the risk of HCW contracting COVID-19, as well as the effectiveness of those measures. The incidence of COVID-19 amongst healthcare workers at the facility was compared to that in the general population over a 13-month period from February 2021 to February 2022. Data on population testing was obtained from the database maintained by the regional testing lab, while HCW testing data was obtained from the occupational health department at the hospital. The incidence of COVID-19 in HCWs and th...

Association between < em > CNR1 < /em > gene polymorphisms and susceptibility to diabetic nephropathy in Iraqi patients with T2DM
J Med Life. 2023 Nov;16(11):1663-1669. doi: 10.25122/jml-2023-0181.ABSTRACTIn individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), the cannabinoid receptor 1 (CNR1) gene polymorphism has been linked to diabetic nephropathy (DN). Different renal disorders, including DN, have been found to alter cannabinoid (CB) receptor expression and activation. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the relationship between CNR1 rs1776966256 and rs1243008337 genetic variants and the risk of developing DN in Iraqi patients with T2DM. The study included 100 patients with T2DM, divided into two groups: 50 with DN and 50 without DN. Gen...

Neuroprotective effects of daidzein against ifosfamide-induced neurotoxicity in male rats: role of selected inflammatory and apoptotic markers
J Med Life. 2023 Nov;16(11):1628-1632. doi: 10.25122/jml-2023-0082.ABSTRACTIfosfamide (IFO), an alkylating chemotherapy agent, is known for its association with neurotoxicity and encephalopathy. This trial was designed to evaluate the protective action of daidzein (DZN) against IFO-induced neurotoxicity in male rats by determining the difference in certain inflammatory and apoptotic markers in the brain tissue of rats. Twenty-eight Wistar rats, weighing 120-150 g, were divided into four groups of seven rats: Group 1 (Control) received no treatment; Group 2 was orally administered DZN (100 mg/kg/day) for seven days; Group 3...

Effects of combined metformin and cabergoline versus metformin alone on ovarian and hormonal activities in Iraqi patients with PCOS and hyperprolactinemia: a randomized clinical trial
J Med Life. 2023 Nov;16(11):1615-1621. doi: 10.25122/jml-2023-0317.ABSTRACTPolycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most prevalent metabolic diseases during female reproductive life, often associated with insulin resistance and hyperprolactinemia. The efficacy of metformin and cabergoline for managing PCOS remains debated in the literature. This three-arm interventional study in Iraq assessed the effects of these drugs on body mass index (BMI), hormonal balance, and uterine artery blood flow in 75 women with PCOS and hyperprolactinemia. Participants were randomized into three groups: metformin (500 mg twice daily), c...

Effect of topical naringenin and its combination with minoxidil on enhancing hair growth in a mouse model
This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of naringenin (NAR) in reducing hair loss. Twenty-four adult Wistar Albino mice, weighing between 25-35 g and aged 6-7 weeks, were used in this research. The dorsal hair of these mice was meticulously clipped and stained subsequently. The mice were randomly divided into four groups (n=6 for each group): (1) negative control group, treated with absolute ethanol alcohol as the vehicle (2) minoxidil (5%) treated group; (3) 0.5% naringenin treated group, and (4) naringenin plus minoxidil treated group. The treatment groups had significantly higher total antioxidant capacity in tissu...

The effects of vitamin D and calcium on primary dysmenorrhea: a systematic review
J Med Life. 2023 Nov;16(11):1597-1605. doi: 10.25122/jml-2023-0248.ABSTRACTDysmenorrhea, affecting approximately 80% of adolescents, significantly impairs quality of life, disrupts sleep patterns, and induces mood changes. Furthermore, its economic impact is substantial, accounting for an estimated $200 billion in the United States and $4.2 million in Japan annually. This review aimed to identify the effects of vitamin D and calcium on primary dysmenorrhea. We conducted a comprehensive literature search across Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and Science Direct, focusing on studies published from 2010 to 2020. Keywords incl...

J Med Life. 2023 Nov;16(11):1707-1713. doi: 10.25122/jml-2023-0196.ABSTRACTOver 80% of surgical patients experience postoperative pain, which, if inadequately managed, can lead to complications, prolonged rehabilitation, chronic pain, and decreased quality of life. Epidural block and quadratus lumborum block are techniques commonly used for postoperative pain management. This comparative analytic study aimed to analyze the differences in the analgesic effects of quadratus lumborum block and epidural block in uterine surgery at Dr. Soetomo General Hospital. The outcomes assessed were the numerical rating score (NRS) as a pa...

Regorafenib modulation of the angiopoietin/TIE2 axis in a mouse model of sepsis-induced lung injury
This study aimed to investigate the effects of regorafenib on lung injury in mice following the induction of sepsis. We divided mice into four groups (n=6 each): a sham group (undergoing laparotomy without cecal ligation and puncture [CLP]), a CLP group, a vehicle group, and a regorafenib-treated group (30 mg/kg IP, administered one hour before CLP). TNF-α, IL-1β, VEGF, MPO, caspase-11, and Ang-2 levels were significantly increased (p<0.05) in the CLP group compared to the sham group, while the regorafenib group showed significant reductions in these markers versus the CLP group (p< 0.05). In contrast, Ang-1 levels...
