Multi-scale Bottleneck Residual Network for Retinal Vessel Segmentation
AbstractPrecise segmentation of retinal vessels is crucial for the prevention and diagnosis of ophthalmic diseases. In recent years, deep learning has shown outstanding performance in retinal vessel segmentation. Many scholars are dedicated to studying retinal vessel segmentation methods based on color fundus images, but the amount of research works on Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscopy (SLO) images is very scarce. In addition, existing SLO image segmentation methods still have difficulty in balancing accuracy and model parameters. This paper proposes a SLO image segmentation model based on lightweight U-Net architecture called...

Organizing and Sharing Medical Knowledge Among Anesthesiology and Intensive care Residents: Evaluating Existing Practices and the Feasibility of Implementing a Dedicated Multiplatform Application
This study took place in Rennes Teaching Hospital and comprised two distinct surveys. First, in April 2018, all residents received a ten-items online survey focusing on managing medical knowledge. Then, through a second online survey constituted of ten items, we sought to assess the use of a new multiplatform cloud-based application named “DansMaBlouse”, dedicated to sharing and indexing medical knowledg e, in anesthesiology and intensive care residents. Among 148 residents that answered the evaluation survey, the most sought out pieces of information in clinical setting were a phone or fax number (74%), drugs’ chara...

Implementation of a Patient Summary Web Application According to the International Patient Summary and Validation in Common Use Cases in Japan
ConclusionsWe implemented a patient summary application that summarizes and visualizes patient information accumulated by existing systems and is evaluated in common use cases in Japan. Efficient sharing of the minimum necessary patient information for physicians is expected to reduce information overload, workload, and burnout. (Source: Journal of Medical Systems)

A Federated Learning Approach to Tumor Detection in Colon Histology Images
AbstractFederated learning (FL), a relatively new area of research in medical image analysis, enables collaborative learning of a federated deep learning model without sharing the data of participating clients. In this paper, we proposeFedDropoutAvg, a new federated learning approach for detection of tumor in images of colon tissue slides. The proposed method leverages the power of dropout, a commonly employed scheme to avoid overfitting in neural networks, in both client selection and federated averaging processes. We examineFedDropoutAvg against other FL benchmark algorithms for two different image classification tasks u...

Danish Prostate Registry (DanProst) – an Updated Version of the Danish Prostate Cancer Registry, Methodology, and Early Results
AbstractIn 2016, we introduced the Danish Prostate Cancer Registry (DaPCaR) which was built on the National Pathology Register from 1995 to 2011. DaPCaR was laborious to use as most data had to be manually imputed with no regular updates. In here we present a new comprehensive centralized prostate registry called the Danish Prostate Registry (DanProst), which includes all men having undergone any histological evaluation of prostate tissue merged with laboratory-, treatment-, prescription data as well as vital status. Here the data included and the methodology of DanProst are described. DanProst is built upon all men with a...

Positive Predictive Values of Anaphylaxis Diagnosis in Claims Data: A Multi-Institutional Study in Taiwan
In conclusion, acceptable PPVs were observed when anaphylaxis cases were identified by ICD-10-CM codes for anaphylaxis, but not by ICD-10-CM codes for severe allergic or drug adverse event with additional modifier codes for acute allergy events. Our multi-institutio nal findings could serve as a fundamental reference for further studies of anaphylaxis based on real-world healthcare databases. (Source: Journal of Medical Systems)

Assessing Patient and Community-Level Social Factors; The Synergistic Effect of Social Needs and Social Determinants of Health on Healthcare Utilization at a Multilevel Academic Healthcare System
AbstractWe investigated the role of both individual-level social needs and community-level social determinants of health (SDOH) in explaining emergency department (ED) utilization rates. We also assessed the potential synergies between the two levels of analysis and their combined effect on patterns of ED visits. We extracted electronic health record (EHR) data between July 2016 and June 2020 for 1,308,598 unique Maryland residents who received care at Johns Hopkins Health System, of which 28,937 (2.2%) patients had at least one documented social need. There was a negative correlation between median household income in a n...

Evaluation of Extracurricular Medical Education in Cardiothoracic Surgery and Cardiology; Students ’ Opinion On Current Medical Training
This study aims to evaluate the impact and benefits of an extracurricular education program on students' knowledge of cardiothoracic surgery and cardiology and to explore possible factors involved in (academic) career decision making.  66 participants were enrolled in the extracurricular education program VECTOR and were included in a cross-sectional cohort study. All participants scored their familiarity with different aspects of cardiothoracic surgery and cardiology prior to and after the course. Data was analyzed using Linear regression and Wilcoxon Signed Rank testing. Participants demonstrated a significant trend to...
