A Spatiotemporal and Multisensory Approach to Designing Wearable Clinical ICU Alarms
In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of two design approaches not yet explored in a smartwatch-based alarm system designed for ICU use: (1) using audiovisual spatial colocalization and (2) adding haptic (i.e., touch) information. We compared the performance of 30 study participants using ICU smartwatch alarms containing auditory icons in two implementations of the audio modality: colocalized with the visual cue on the smartwatch ’s low-quality speaker versus delivered from a higher quality speaker located two feet away from participants (like a stationary alarm bay situated near patients in the ICU). Additionall...

Effectiveness of Virtual Reality in Anxiety and Pain Management in Children and Adolescents Receiving Cancer Treatment: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
AbstractTrials. The study aimed to investigate the effect of virtual reality interventions on relieving pain and anxiety in children and adolescents receiving cancer treatment. A search that involved Cochrane Library (comprising Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL)), PubMed, ProQuest, MEDLINE, Web of Sciences, Science Direct, and Scopus electronic databases covering the records from January 1, 2000 up to May, 2023 was conducted to determine randomized controlled trials that could be included in our study. The results of the search were limited to “anxiety and pain, adolescents, children, virtual realit...

Multi-scale Bottleneck Residual Network for Retinal Vessel Segmentation
AbstractPrecise segmentation of retinal vessels is crucial for the prevention and diagnosis of ophthalmic diseases. In recent years, deep learning has shown outstanding performance in retinal vessel segmentation. Many scholars are dedicated to studying retinal vessel segmentation methods based on color fundus images, but the amount of research works on Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscopy (SLO) images is very scarce. In addition, existing SLO image segmentation methods still have difficulty in balancing accuracy and model parameters. This paper proposes a SLO image segmentation model based on lightweight U-Net architecture called...

Organizing and Sharing Medical Knowledge Among Anesthesiology and Intensive care Residents: Evaluating Existing Practices and the Feasibility of Implementing a Dedicated Multiplatform Application
This study took place in Rennes Teaching Hospital and comprised two distinct surveys. First, in April 2018, all residents received a ten-items online survey focusing on managing medical knowledge. Then, through a second online survey constituted of ten items, we sought to assess the use of a new multiplatform cloud-based application named “DansMaBlouse”, dedicated to sharing and indexing medical knowledg e, in anesthesiology and intensive care residents. Among 148 residents that answered the evaluation survey, the most sought out pieces of information in clinical setting were a phone or fax number (74%), drugs’ chara...

Implementation of a Patient Summary Web Application According to the International Patient Summary and Validation in Common Use Cases in Japan
ConclusionsWe implemented a patient summary application that summarizes and visualizes patient information accumulated by existing systems and is evaluated in common use cases in Japan. Efficient sharing of the minimum necessary patient information for physicians is expected to reduce information overload, workload, and burnout. (Source: Journal of Medical Systems)

A Federated Learning Approach to Tumor Detection in Colon Histology Images
AbstractFederated learning (FL), a relatively new area of research in medical image analysis, enables collaborative learning of a federated deep learning model without sharing the data of participating clients. In this paper, we proposeFedDropoutAvg, a new federated learning approach for detection of tumor in images of colon tissue slides. The proposed method leverages the power of dropout, a commonly employed scheme to avoid overfitting in neural networks, in both client selection and federated averaging processes. We examineFedDropoutAvg against other FL benchmark algorithms for two different image classification tasks u...
