Epidemiology of antifungal susceptibility: Review of literature
Publication date: September 2018Source: Journal de Mycologie Médicale, Volume 28, Issue 3Author(s): I. Hadrich, A. AyadiAbstractFungal infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality despite the latest developments of diagnostic tools and therapeutic options. Early initiation of the appropriate antifungal therapy has been demonstrated to have a direct impact on the patient's outcome. Antifungal susceptibility testing methods are available to detect antifungal resistance and to determine the best treatment for a specific fungus. American and European standards have been developed, as well as equivalent commercial s...

Tinea blepharo-ciliaris in a 13-year-old girl caused by Trichophyton benhamiae
We report a 13-year-old girl with type I diabetes mellitus who had right eyelid swelling and eyelash loss for two weeks. The lesions were presented as erythematous patches with scales and tiny pustules on the right upper and lower eyelids with broken eyelashes. Two additional annular erythematous patches with scaly active borders were found on her right forearm and right thigh. Microscopic examination of broken eyelashes demonstrated many chains of arthroconidia and hyaline hyphae in an endothrix invasion pattern. Fungal cultures of right eyelid scales, eyelashes, and right thigh lesions all grew Trichophyton benhamiae, w...

An impressive case of chromoblastomycosis due to Fonsecaea pedrosoi in a patient with a long history of fungal infection
Publication date: Available online 17 August 2018Source: Journal de Mycologie MédicaleAuthor(s): M. Romero-Navarrete, L.F. Ruíz, A. Castillo, R. Arenas, M.E. Vega-Memije, J. Xicohtencatl-Cortes, M. Espinoza-Rivera, R. Hernández-CastroAbstractChromoblastomycosis is defined as a chronic cutaneous and subcutaneous fungal infection caused by melanized or brown-pigmented fungi. A 63-year-old man farmer showed on external and internal part of the right arm, a well-delimited verrucous and hyperkeratotic plaque, with atrophic and cicatricial areas. Direct examination of skin scrapings samples showed the presence of muriform ce...

Synthesis, characterization and antifungal activity of a novel formulated nanocomposite containing Indolicidin and Graphene oxide against disseminated candidiasis
ConclusionThis study suggests that synergistic combination of GO and IN provide a new option, representing a potential therapeutic efficiency against disseminated candidiasis in an animal model as well as might be used as adjunct therapy in the management of candidiasis. However, further investigation is needed to evaluate the efficacy of the nanocomposite. (Source: Journal of Medical Mycology)
