Economic burden of advanced lung cancer patients treated by gefitinib alone and combined with chemotherapy in two regions of China
CONCLUSIONS: The economic burden of lung cancer treatment mainly came from the cost of the drugs. Patients taking chemotherapy had significantly higher cost compared to patients using targeted therapy. The cost was generally higher for those with higher educational level, those with higher family income, and those living in an economically more developed city. Patients with NSCLC had higher cost compared to patients with SCLC.PMID:37855437 | DOI:10.1080/13696998.2023.2272536 (Source: Journal of Medical Economics)

The economic impact of obesity in Kuwait: A micro-costing study evaluating the burden of obesity-related comorbidities
ConclusionsOur study confirms that ORCs generate significant financial burden to the public payer. The study provides an economic case for policymakers to recognize the exigency for obesity prevention and control in accordance with the ORC prevalence, and the need for sustainable investments towards body-mass index management to prevent individuals from developing multiple comorbidities.PMID:37853705 | DOI:10.1080/13696998.2023.2265721 (Source: Journal of Medical Economics)

Prevalence, treatment status, medical costs, quality of life, and productivity loss in Japanese adult patients with anemia: A real-world database study
CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that more than half of patients with anemia were undiagnosed and untreated. Patients with anemia had higher medical costs, lower QOL, and greater productivity loss than those without anemia.PMID:37849298 | DOI:10.1080/13696998.2023.2271752 (Source: Journal of Medical Economics)

Cost-effectiveness analysis of HLA-B*13:01 screening for the prevention of co-trimoxazole-induced severe cutaneous adverse reactions among HIV-infected patients in Thailand
This study aims to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of HLA-B*13:01 screening before co-trimoxazole initiation in HIV-infected patients in Thailand. A combination of a decision tree model and a Markov model was used to estimate lifetime costs and outcomes of two strategies including 1) HLA-B*13:01 screening before co-trimoxazole initiation and 2) usual practice from a societal perspective. Alternative drugs are not considered because dapsone (the second-line drug) also presents a genetic risk. Input parameters were obtained from literature, government documents, and part of the TREAT Asia HIV Observational Database (TAHOD). ...

A cost-effectiveness analysis of national smoking cessation services among chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients in Thailand
CONCLUSIONS: FAH-SAI clinics were cost-effective under Thailand's WTP threshold. Our results could inform policymakers in allocating resources to support smoking cessation services for COPD patients in Thailand.PMID:37818930 | DOI:10.1080/13696998.2023.2269748 (Source: Journal of Medical Economics)

Cost-effectiveness of left atrial appendage closure with watchman for non-valvular atrial fibrillation patients in Japan
Conclusions: Over a lifetime time horizon, LAAC is cost-saving relative to warfarin and DOACs for stroke risk reduction in NVAF patients in Japan and is associated with improved quality of life.PMID:37819734 | DOI:10.1080/13696998.2023.2266275 (Source: Journal of Medical Economics)

Early exploration of the economic impact of Transradial Access (TRA) versus Transfemoral Access (TFA) for neurovascular procedures in Spain
Conclusions The early economic model suggests that implementing TRA is associated with reduced costs and complications in diagnostic procedures. In therapeutic procedures, TRA lead to fewer complications and it is estimated to be cost-neutral, however its full potential still needs to be quantified.PMID:37814553 | DOI:10.1080/13696998.2023.2266956 (Source: Journal of Medical Economics)
