An Unusual Case of Unilateral Marginal Mandibular Nerve Palsy Associated with Odontogenic Space Infection
AbstractOdontogenic space infections are common in dental practice, characterized by localized abscess formation  with potential to spread to adjacent anatomical spaces. Neurogenic involvement in odontogenic infections is primarily found to be associated with sensory nerve branches, however involvement of motor nerves in odontogenic space infection leading to facial asymmetry has not been widely reported. In this case report, the authors present an unusual finding of facial asymmetry due to isolated marginal mandibular nerve weakness in a patient with a submandibular space infection. Effect of Frequent Computed Tomography Examinations with Contrast Media on the Renal Function of Patients with Oral Squamous Cell Cancer and an Evaluation of Risk Factors for Post-Operative Chronic Kidney Disease
ConclusionsClinicians should pay close attention to these risk factor of post-operative CKD during the management of patients with OSCC that undergo radical surgery and frequent follow-up CT examinations with contrast media. (Source: Journal of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery)

The Colossal Mandibular Ameloblastoma: Surgical Challenges and Current Perspectives of Management
AbstractAmeloblastoma is the most common aggressive benign odontogenic tumour of the jaws. Ameloblastoma is a benign epithelial odontogenic tumour that typically arises in the mandible or maxilla. A clinical, radiographic and histopathological report is presented of a case of giant acanthomatous ameloblastoma in the left hemi mandible of a 46-year-old healthy lady. The histopathological examination of the removed specimen revealed the histopathological pattern of an acanthomatous ameloblastoma. The radiographic appearance of the lesion showed the presence of multilocular radiolucencies, which were crossing the midline, whi...

Evaluation of Expression of WNT1 and PTCH Genes in Peripheral Blood of Patients with Odontogenic Cysts and Tumours of the Jaws by Quantitative RT-PCR: A Pilot Study
ConclusionWNT1 and PTCH genes were expressed in peripheral blood of patients with odontogenic lesions. WNT1 and PTCH genes may be potential predictors in individuals who would develop odontogenic lesions. Further studies on expression of WNT1 and PTCH genes with larger number of samples might give a future scope for target therapy in odontogenic lesions. Estimation of Titanium Levels in Blood Following Reconstruction of Post-Craniotomy Defect by Titanium Mesh Using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES)
ConclusionThe study revealed that the levels of titanium ions increase on prolonged contact with living tissues. The trace elements have to be analyzed at regular intervals. This first-of-the-time study if extended to larger sample size would reveal interesting facts. (Source: Journal of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery)

The Local Route of Administration of Dexamethasone in Impacted Mandibular Third Molar Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomised Controlled Trials and a Critical Narrative Review on the Claimed Advantages of the Local Route
ConclusionThe claimed advantages of the local route of DXM do not appear to be scientifically valid. Clinical trials supported with DXM plasma measurements are needed to confirm the absence of a systemic effect when DXM is administered locally. (Source: Journal of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery)

Involvement of the Oral Mucosa by Ingestion of Caustic Substances due to a Suicide Attempt and Its Treatment with the Use of Photobiomodulation: Report of Two Cases
AbstractSuicide is a major public health challenge worldwide, affecting both classes, sex and ages. The WHO estimates that 700,000 people die from this condition worldwide. With the onset of the pandemic, they believe that these numbers have increased, affecting mainly the most vulnerable. The ingestion of caustic substances is one of the most used means in suicides with significant damage to the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract, in which the dental surgeon is the professional who must provide care for the treatment and oral rehabilitation in these cases. Thus, due to the scarcity of studies, we aim to report two cas...

Evaluation of the Linear Relationship of the Inferior Alveolar Nerve Canal to the Lateral Cortex and the Alveolar Crest in the Posterior Mandible: A Computed Tomographic Study
ConclusionThe study has identified the average linear measurements of the buccal cortical bone along the path of IAN in the mandible, average height of alveolar bone above the IAN and average distance between the IAN with the first and second molar root apices. This will be useful guide while planning and performing various mandibular surgical procedures close to the IAN nerve and procedures that can disturb the IAN. The implications of these findings will influence the course of surgery. (Source: Journal of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery)

A “Window” to Protect the Facial Nerve: A Descriptive Cadaveric Study
DiscussionThe retromandibular approach is a versatile approach to the condyle subcondylar area as it provides much-required visibility and accessibility. The facial nerve branching pattern and intercommunicating branches determine the safety window which is adequate in most cases. The retromandibular vein is a reliable landmark predicting the vicinity of the facial nerve. (Source: Journal of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery)

Safety and Efficacy of Resveratrol in Healing of Maxillofacial Fractures: A Randomized Controlled Study
ConclusionThere was no statistically significant difference in bite force, serum ALP level and serum osteocalcin levels between placebo group and resveratrol group. Though not statistically significant but early increased level of serum osteogenic markers, better restoration of bite force in group 2 (tab. Resveratrol) indicates toward its possible optimistic role in maxillofacial fracture healing. More studies with larger sample sizes are needed in order to confirm the efficacy of this drug in maxillofacial fracture. (Source: Journal of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery)

Use of Leukocyte- and Platelet-Rich Fibrin to Prevent Osteonecrosis of the Jaws Associated with the Use of Bisphosphonate Therapy: A Case Series
AbstractMedication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) consists of an area of exposed intraoral or extraoral bone that affects patients with a history of use of antiresorptive and antiangiogenic medications, and who have not undergone head and neck radiotherapy. Leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) is an autologous material of great potential, used as an adjuvant in surgical treatments, especially where healing is compromised. The aim of this article is to report three cases of the use of L-PRF in the prevention of MRONJ in three female Caucasian under bisphosphonates therapy. Patient 1, 86  years old, with o...
