Hip fracture risk and safety with alendronate treatment in the oldest ‐old
ConclusionIn old patients with prior fracture, alendronate treatment reduces the risk of hip fracture with sustained safety, indicating that this treatment should be considered in these high‐risk patients. (Source: Journal of Internal Medicine)

Targeted proteomic analysis of habitual coffee consumption
ConclusionsThe current study supports an inverse association between coffee intake and plasma LEP and CHI3L1 levels. The coffee‐CHI3L1 association is novel and warrants further investigation given links between CHI3L1 and health conditions that are also potentially influenced by coffee. This article is protected by copyright. What is the Outcome in Patients with Acute Leukaemia who Survive Severe Acute Graft ‐versus‐Host Disease?
This study was a landmark analysis of 23,567 patients with acute Leukaemia who survived for more than 6 months after HSCT, 2002–2014. Patients alive after severe aGVHD (n = 1,738) were compared to controls. Patients with severe aGVHD had higher non‐relapse mortality (NRM) and higher rate of extensive chronic GVHD (cGVHD) than the controls (p < 10‐5). The probability of relapse was significantly lower in the severe aGVHD group, but Leukaemia‐free survival (LFS) and overall survival were significantly lower than for the controls (p < 10‐5). Five‐year LFS in patients with severe aGVHD was 49%, as opposed to ...

Occurrence of graft ‐versus‐host disease increases mortality after umbilical cord blood transplantation for acute myeloid leukemia: a report from Eurocord and the ALWP of the EBMT
ConclusionsThe occurrence of grade II‐IV acute or chronic GVHD each increases overall mortality after UCBT for AML mitigating the possible GVL effect of GVHD.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. (Source: Journal of Internal Medicine)

Psychosocial stress and major cardiovascular events in patients with stable coronary heart disease
ConclusionsPsychosocial stress, such as depressive symptoms, loss of interest, living alone, and financial stress, was associated with increased CV mortality in patients with stable CHD despite optimal medical secondary prevention treatment. Secondary prevention of CHD should therefore focus also on psychosocial issues both in clinical management and in future clinical trials. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. A protective role of IRF3 and IRF7 signalling downstream TLRs in the development of vein graft disease via type I interferons
ConclusionsThe present study is the first to describe a protective role of both IRF3 and IRF7 in VGD. IRFs regulate VGD downstream TLRs since Irf3−/− and Irf7−/− vein grafts show increased vessel wall thickening after respectively 14 and 28 days after surgery. (Source: Journal of Internal Medicine)

The aetiology of B ‐cell lymphoid malignancies with a focus on chronic inflammation and infections
Abstract B‐cell malignancies are a heterogeneous group of lymphoproliferative disorders with different molecular characteristics and clinical course. It is increasingly recognized that the group displays considerable heterogeneity also regarding aetiologic factors. Here, we summarize the latest developments in the aetiology of B‐cell lymphoid malignancy subtypes focusing on immune perturbation. Severe immune suppression constitutes a strong and well‐established risk factor for aggressive subtypes (e.g. diffuse large B‐cell and Burkitt lymphoma), but appears unrelated to risk of common low‐grade subtypes (e.g. fol...
