Does Fixation of the Gastric Conduit Reduce the Incidence of Gastric Volvulus After Esophagectomy?
ConclusionAcute volvulus of the gastric conduit is a rare complication after esophagectomy. Early diagnosis and surgical intervention are critical. In this study, although not statistically significant, fixation of the gastric conduit did reduce the number of patients who experienced postoperative volvulus. Additional future studies are needed to validate this technique and the prevention of postoperative acute gastric conduit volvulus among a diverse patient population. Early postoperative hyperglycemia as a predictor of postoperative infectious complications and overall survival in non-diabetic patients with esophageal cancer
ConclusionPostoperative hyperglycemia is associated with PICs and worse survival after esophagectomy, particularly in patients without DM. (Source: Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery)

Association of Textbook Outcome and Hospital Volume with Long-Term Survival Following Resection for Hepatocellular Carcinoma: What Matters More?
ConclusionLong-term survival following HCC resection was largely associated with hospital case volume rather than TO. The effect of TO on long-term outcomes was largely mediated by hospital case volume highlighting the importance of centralization of care for patients with HCC. Evaluation and Recalibration of Risk-Stratified Pancreatoduodenectomy Drain Fluid Amylase Removal Criteria
ConclusionsWithin a learning health system, we recalibrated post-PD drain removal thresholds to DFA1  ≤ 300 and DFA3 ≤ 100 for low-risk and DFA1 ≤ 100 and DFA3 ≤ 50 for high-risk patients. This methodology is generalizable to other centers for developing institution-specific criteria to optimize safe early drain removal. (Source: Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery)

Effects of Spinal Deformities on Hiatal Hernia Occurrence and Recurrence
ConclusionsSpinal deformity patients were more likely to have more complex and larger hiatal hernias. They were at higher risk of hiatal hernia recurrence after repair with shorter times to recurrence. This is a group that requires special attention with additional preoperative counseling and possibly use of surgical adjuncts in repair. (Source: Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery)

Missed Opportunities: the Timing and Frequency of Screening Colonoscopy in Patients That Develop Esophageal Adenocarcinoma
ConclusionsNearly one-half of patients ultimately diagnosed with EA had one or more SCs, and most of these patients had GERD symptoms, were using acid suppression medications or had an ASGE indication for a screening EGD. Despite this, only 18% had an EGD prior to the EA diagnosis. The addition of an EGD at the time of SC in these patients may have allowed the detection of BE or EA at an early, endoscopically curable stage and represents a missed opportunity to intervene in the natural history of this disease. Meta-analysis of Prognostic Factors for Overall Survival Among Resected Patients with Spontaneous Ruptured Hepatocellular Carcinoma
ConclusionApart from some conventional prognostic factors identified in resected patients with SRHCC, numerous prognostic factors have also been unmasked, which might provide clinical reference to stratify patients with different therapeutic regimes. (Source: Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery)
