Surgical Cancer Care in Safety-Net Hospitals: a Systematic Review
ConclusionsThese findings highlight barriers in care facing many cancer patients. Continued efforts should address improving both access and quality of care for SNH patients. Future models include a transition away from a two-tiered system of resourced and under-resourced hospitals toward an integrated cancer system.Graphical Abstract (Source: Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery)

Recurrence in Paraesophageal Hernia: Patient Factors and Composite Surgical Repair in 862 Cases
ConclusionRepair of giant PEH is associated with substantial anatomical recurrence associated with patient and technique factors. Patient factors included age  <  70 years, Barrett’s esophagus, and hiatus tension. “Composite repair” was associated with lower recurrence rate. (Source: Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery)

Do Weekend Discharges Impact Readmission Rate in Patients Undergoing Pancreatic Surgery?
ConclusionsWith careful clinical decision making, patients may safely be discharged on the weekend after pancreatic surgery without increasing 30-day readmission rate. (Source: Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery)

Association of County-Level Food Deserts and Food Swamps with Hepatopancreatobiliary Cancer Outcomes
ConclusionThe surrounding food environment of patients may serve as a modifiable socio-demographic risk factor that contributes to disparities in surgical outcomes of HPB cancer. (Source: Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery)

Does Fixation of the Gastric Conduit Reduce the Incidence of Gastric Volvulus After Esophagectomy?
ConclusionAcute volvulus of the gastric conduit is a rare complication after esophagectomy. Early diagnosis and surgical intervention are critical. In this study, although not statistically significant, fixation of the gastric conduit did reduce the number of patients who experienced postoperative volvulus. Additional future studies are needed to validate this technique and the prevention of postoperative acute gastric conduit volvulus among a diverse patient population. Association of Textbook Outcome and Hospital Volume with Long-Term Survival Following Resection for Hepatocellular Carcinoma: What Matters More?
ConclusionLong-term survival following HCC resection was largely associated with hospital case volume rather than TO. The effect of TO on long-term outcomes was largely mediated by hospital case volume highlighting the importance of centralization of care for patients with HCC.
