Characteristics of mechanical CPR-related injuries: A Case series
ConclusionWe found five iatrogenic injuries which in itself could have been fatal had the patients survived the incident. It is of great importance for the forensic pathologists to be aware of the possible types of injuries and their severity caused by compressions when dealing with patients treated with mechanical CPR as they are both diverse and can be extensive. Visualization and Material-Based Differentiation of Lodged Projectiles by Extended CT Scale and the Dual-Energy Index
This study uses real forensic cases to demonstrate that—depending on the degree of deformation—a detailed visualization of lodged projectiles using ECTS can provide useful information regarding the ammunition used and allows accurate caliber measurements. Independent from the degree of deformation, the in situ classification of bullets, even fragmented bullets, according to their metallic components is feasible by dual-energy index (DEI) calculations. The assessment of a lodged projectile with CT images provides useful information on the case; thus, a close examination of lodged projectiles or bullet fragments should b...

The rise of suicides using a deadly dose of barbiturates in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, the Netherlands, between 2006 and 2017
DiscussionOur data showed a rise in suicides resulting from barbiturate overdose whereas the total number of inhabitants and suicides resulting from medication overdose has remained more or less constant. Easy access of information or medication through the internet and ‘right-to-die-organisations’ may have directly impacted the rise in suicides resulting from an overdose of barbiturates. To our knowledge this is the first study analysing the rise of barbiturate suicides and the influence of media in published literature. (Source: Journal of Forensic and Legal Medicine)

Weighted drownings - An example of augmentation or enhancement of a suicide method
Publication date: Available online 13 January 2020Source: Journal of Forensic and Legal MedicineAuthor(s): Lilli Stephenson, Corinna van den Heuvel, Roger W. ByardAbstractWhile planned complex suicides utilize more than one method, on occasion a planned suicide merely involves augmentation of the lethality of the chosen single method. A study was undertaken of augmented suicidal drownings from XXXX over a 25-year period (1993–2017). 493 cases (M:F 2.6:1) were found in which death was attributed to drowning. The age range for males was 7mths-93yrs (mean 43.7yrs) and for females 11mths-87yrs (mean 48.2yrs). A subset of 116...

Skate or die: Unusual circumstances surrounding a natural cause of death
We present a case of a 43-year-old homeless man with a history of chronic alcohol abuse who was found dead in a skate park in Geneva. He was inflicted with a stab wound to his abdomen, with a knife found in situ. With the suspicion of homicide, a crime scene investigation team, including a forensic pathologist, was summoned to the scene. However, further examination of the body revealed a deep cut with hesitation marks on the left forearm. This discovery raised the hypothesis of a suicide. Here, we have described the investigations made by the police and forensic department, along with the circumstances and autopsy finding...
