Using National Incident-Based Reporting System Data to Explore Animal Cruelty Incidents that Occur with Intimate Partner and Family Violence: A Brief Report
ConclusionsAlthough exploratory, this study highlights the value of NIBRS animal cruelty data and the opportunity to gain insights at the incident level of details that were previously unavailable from other animal cruelty studies that consider IPV and FV. This study provides a foundation for future research that can inform theoretical development and prevention efforts related to the link. (Source: Journal of Family Violence)

The Emergency Department Response to Indigenous Women Experiencing Traumatic Brain Injury from Family Violence: Insights from Interviews with Hospital Staff in Regional Australia
ConclusionThe findings provide valuable insights into the services and treatment regimes available to women and the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women presenting to hospital. The implications include the need for hospitals to provide a standardized, multidisciplinary pathway for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women; the need to fund after-hours (e.g., nights and weekends) ED hospital social and cultural supports; and the need for specialized workers with training in responses to family violence-related TBI to facilitate effective supports of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women. Methods and tools to screen and assess risks for intimate partner violence among women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in six high-income countries: A scoping review
ConclusionsGiven the documented barriers to migrant help-seeking, screening and risk assessment has an important role to play in ensuring that women from CaLD backgrounds are linked into appropriate IPV support services in a timely manner. However, there is very limited evidence to demonstrate that existing screening/risk assessment tools and strategies meet the specific needs of CaLD populations, and more attention needs to be given to intersectional experiences of violence. After All This Time: Clarifying Misconceptions and Charting Clear Directions for the Next 25 Years of Johnson ’s Typology
AbstractIn 1995, Michael P. Johnson published work proposing there were multiple types of intimate partner violence, and types differed in their causes, characteristics, and outcomes. As more than a quarter century has passed, this special issue brings together reviews of and reflections on work related to the typology that has already been done and includes new empirical and theoretical works to open the next quarter century. This introduction details the purpose and process that led to this special issue, summarizes what we see as the contributions of this issue, and ends by looking ahead to what work still needs to be d...

“It’s like Slapping Somebody in the Face in the Middle of Sex”: An Intersectional Exploration of Emotional Abuse in Queer Relationships
ConclusionScholars should be more intentional and curious about how racial discrimination may factor into emotional abuse. Interventions may include providing participants with specific examples of racial insults and asking whether they have encountered them. Scholars should also explore building bridges between the IPV literature and the literature on sexual racism because of convergence between these phenomena. (Source: Journal of Family Violence)

Commentary: 25 Years After Johnson ’s Typology of Intimate Partner Violence the Impact of Johnson’s Typology on Clinical Work
AbstractThis commentary highlights the impact of Michael Johnson ’s work, and the concept that intimate partner violence (IPV) is not a “one-size fits all” phenomena, on the mental health field. Johnson’s,1995 typology led to a paradigm shift in research and the clinical work of many mental health providers who seek to prevent or treat IPV. Johnson ’s idea that there is more than one type of violence, i.e.,situational couple violence andintimate terrorism, moved many from the idea that it is never appropriate to offer conjoint treatment to couples who have experienced IPV. Instead, it became increasingly clear th...

The Reach of Johnson ’s Typology of Intimate Partner Violence: a Scoping Review of Empirical Research, 1996–2020
ConclusionsEmpirical engagement with Johnson ’s typology is modest yet extends across a large number of independent authors and appears in journals across multiple disciplines. It is not clear why there has not been more empirical engagement given the widespread and increasing citation of Johnson’s work, but perhaps this is part of the rea son why the typology has not ended the gender symmetry debate. Moving forward requires better understanding of why intimate partner violence researchers often choose not to empirically test Johnson’s typology. (Source: Journal of Family Violence)

My Reactions to “Johnson’s Typology of Intimate Partner Violence: Reflecting on the First 25 Years and Looking Ahead”
AbstractAfter a brief expression of my gratitude for the support I have received over the years, I move on to make five general points about the papers in this special issue. First, I believe that, taken together, the three literature reviews accomplish three quite different tasks: (a) they document the nature of the impact of the typology on the research literature, (b) they affirm the validity of the typology, and (c) they illustrate the general problem of the publication of seriously flawed analyses in refereed journals. Second, the other six papers in the issue highlight the importance of attending to the impact of spe...

Exploring Factors Shaping Primary Health Care Readiness to Respond to Family Violence: Findings from a Rapid Evidence Assessment
ConclusionsFV is a serious public health concern and PHC providers have a vital role in early detection of FV and the poor health outcomes associated with violence A focus on comprehensive or multi-component FV interventions are more likely to change provider behavior, and would allow for safe, confident, and professional identification and assessment of FV within PHC. Readiness to Change and Deception as Predictors of Program Completion in Perpetrators of Intimate Partner Violence
ConclusionDue to the potentially positive impact of completing an intervention program for IPV perpetrator outcomes, the present study is important in terms of indicating that motivational stage, as well as self-deception, are relevant to treatment compliance. This finding suggests that targeting areas such as treatment readiness and self-deception may lead to improved treatment adherence and IPV perpetrator rehabilitation.
