Chlamydia avium detection from a ring-necked parakeet (psittacula krameri) in france
The crossing of host species barriers, through the spreading populations of introduced pet animals that become established in the wild, sets the stage for zoonotic pathogen (re)emergence. A literature review on pathogens that are hosted by the ring-necked parakeet Psittacula krameri, a worldwide introduced pet, highlighted local infections of captive birds by chlamydial agents with high sanitary risk for human health in its introduced range. We searched for these pathogens through cloacal swabs collected from 85 individuals in an invasive population established in the suburban areas of Paris (Ile-de-France) from five local...

Adnexal cystadenoma in a bearded dragon (pogona vitticeps)
An adult female bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) presented to the University of Georgia Veterinary Teaching Hospital for an area of swelling affecting the left eye of approximately 3 years ′ duration. Upon examination, the left eye could not be evaluated due to an extensive periorbital mass effect. Hematologic and advanced diagnostic testing were recommended but due to financial concerns the owner declined. Ultimately the patient was humanely euthanized and was submitted for necrops y. The mass was diagnosed via histopathology as a cystadenoma of the eyelid. (Source: Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine)

Scrotal stalk ablation and orchiectomy using electrosurgery in the male sugar glider (petaurus breviceps) and histologic anatomy of the testes and associated scrotal structures
This report describes an alternative surgical technique for performing scrotal ablation and orchiectomy in the adult male sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps) using electrosurgery. Eight animals from a local small mammal shelter group that presented for routine surgical castration for population control measures were included in this study. Mean surgical time was 4.37 ± 2.13seconds. Mean anesthesia time was 12.32 ± 5.63minutes. Mean recovery time was 8.37 ± 3.68minutes. Mean total procedure time was 22.24 ± 5.69minutes. Pharmacokinetics of single-dose buprenorphine, butorphanol, and hydromorphone in the domestic ferret (mustela putorius furo)
The objective of this study is to establish the clinical pharmacokinetic profile of four different opioid drugs (buprenorphine, butorphanol, hydromorphone, and morphine) in the domestic ferret. Twenty-four, approximately one-year-old, male neutered purpose-bred domestic ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) were used for this study. The ferrets were divided into four groups of six, with a different opioid drug used for each group. A pre-opioid venous blood sample was obtained via cranial vena cava venipuncture. Clinical value of fructosamine measurements and fructosamine - albumin ratio in hypoglycemic ferrets (mustela putorius furo)
The objective of this preliminary study was to establish a reference range for plasma fructosamine concentration and fructosamine - albumin ratio in healthy ferrets and to compare these reference intervals to values obtained from hypoglycemic ferrets. Fructosamine concentration has been shown to reflect blood glucose concentration over the previous 1 –2 weeks in other animal species, and may be a useful indicator of chronic hypoglycemia in ferrets diagnosed with insulinoma. Plasma fructosamine was measured with an automated colorimetric assay using nitroblue tetrazolium. (Source: Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine)

Mesenteric heterotopic ossificans in a ferret (mustela putorious furo): a rare cause of soft tissue ossification
Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a rare condition characterised by abnormal bone production in soft tissue. Very few cases of HO have been reported in animals (e.g., dogs, horses) and often this disease process is a consequence of a traumatic incident.A 5-year-old, male European ferret (Mustela putorious furo) was referred for anorexia, generalised weakness and weight loss. Clinical examination revealed multiple abdominal masses. An explorative laparotomy identified omental, white/tan, nodular to coalescing hard lesions. (Source: Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine)

Diagnosis and surgical treatment of a transitional cell carcinoma in the bladder apex of a pet rabbit (oryctolagus cuniculus)
A 6-year-old, 1.9-kg female spayed lop-eared European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) was evaluated for acute hematuria and inappropriate urination and defecation of less than 12-hours duration. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a suspected bladder mass. Ultrasound-guided cystocentesis was performed and the results of the urinalysis were unremarkable. An abdominal exploratory surgery revealed a nodular cystic mass at the cranial ventral apex of the bladder wall which measured 0.5cm x 0.5cm. Based on histopathologic evaluation, excision of the neoplasm was complete and the mass was diagnosed as transitional cell carcinoma (...

Antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of biofilm forming staphylococcus aureus isolated from pigeon external ocular infections
Pathogenic microorganisms cause external ocular infections due to their virulence factors and reduced host defenses that may result from many factors such as living condition, nutrition, genetics, physiology, hygiene, fever and age. Staphylococcus species are a predominant bacterial isolate among the known and opportunistic pathogens in eye infections. The changing profile of microorganisms involved in ocular infections and the emergence of acquired microbial resistance dictate the need for investigative studies regarding bacterial profiles and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of external ocular infections.
