Treatment of unilateral perineal hernias in 2 male chinchillas (chinchilla lanigera)
Two sexually intact adult male chinchillas were presented with a swelling in the perineal region. Radiographically both masses had a soft tissue opacity. Ultrasonography confirmed the tentative diagnosis of perineal hernia. In the first case the ultrasonographic examination revealed a fluid-filled structure inside the swelling, which was determined to be the urinary bladder. In the second case the hernia sac was filled with homogeneous tissue, belived to be fat. Subsequently, unilateral perineal herniorrhaphies including an internal obturator muscle flap transposition technique were performed. (Source: Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine)

Comparative study of scrotal and prescrotal castration in pet rabbits (oryctolagus cuniculus)
Castration of rabbits can be achieved with several surgical techniques. The choice of the technique currently depends on surgeon preference since objective comparison between techniques is lacking. The aim of the current study was to compare the scrotal and prescrotal approaches in pet rabbits. The surgery and anesthesia duration, the postoperative appetite and feces production, and the postoperative complications were compared. Thirteen rabbits were randomly assigned to the scrotal or prescrotal castration groups. (Source: Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine)

Surgical management of a traumatic elbow luxation with circumferential suture prostheses in a rabbit (oryctolagus cuniculus)
A 2-year-old dwarf rabbit was referred for right forelimb lameness of 1-week duration. Physical examination and radiographic findings were consistent with an elbow luxation. Manual reduction under anesthesia was unsuccessful in correcting the luxated joint. A surgical approach was recommended to repair the rabbit elbow luxation. Transcondylar, transradial, and transulnar tunnels were drilled from lateral to medial with 2 suture prostheses being placed, 1 from the radius to the humerus and 1 from the humerus to the ulna. Intravenous alfaxalone anaesthesia in leopard geckos (eublepharis macularius)
Intravenous alfaxalone, administered at a dose of 5mg/kg in the jugular vein, was evaluated in 20 leopard geckos (Eublepharis macularius) to ascertain its ability to provide a level of anesthesia. The induction time, time to loss of mandibular tone, interval of deep anaesthesia, and full recovery time were 27.5 ± 30.7seconds (10–56seconds), 1.3 ± 1.4minutes (11 seconds-4 minutes), 12.5 ± 2.2minutes (11.11–15.39minutes) and 18.8 ± 12.1minutes (10.4–52.31minutes), respectively. A significant reduction in heart rate (74 ± 12.9 beats/minute) between 2–24minutes after alfaxalone administration was recorded. (Source...

Metastatic granulosa cell tumor in a mangrove snake (boiga dendrophila melanota)
A 12-year-old, female mangrove snake (Boiga dendrophila melanota) was presented with a one-month history of anorexia, lethargy, and progressive distention of the caudal coelomic cavity. Based on ultrasonographic and cytological examination, an ovarian neoplasia was considered to be the presumptive antemortem diagnosis. Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a granulosa cell tumor (GCT) with metastatic tumors in the coelomic fat bodies. Four months following oophorectomy and surgical removal of the distant metastasis, the snake was euthanized because of acute onset of lethargy, cardiomegaly, and dyspnea. (Sourc...

Polyarthropathy and anterior uveitis as paraneoplastic syndromes in a guinea pig with disseminated lymphoma
A 4-year-old intact male guinea pig was presented for evaluation of ocular pain and forelimb lameness. Initial examination confirmed bilateral anterior uveitis and the lameness was attributed to a bilateral carpal and metacarpal polyarthropathy. Carpal joint taps revealed non-septic marked mixed inflammation later confirmed as a non-erosive immune-mediated polyarthropathy (IMPA). Treatment with topical steroid ophthalmic ointment resulted in rapid resolution of the uveitis; the arthropathy was initially managed with pain medication and anti-inflammatories, then later with doxycycline and cyclosporine.
