An approximately 4-week-old female eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) was presented to the Zoological Medicine Service of Louisiana State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital (Baton Rouge, LA) in late August of 2016. The squirrel had been found on the ground after it apparently fell from a tree. (Source: Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine)

Survey to Investigate Owners ׳ Perceptions and Experiences of Pet Rabbit Husbandry and Health
Although pet rabbits are becoming increasingly popular in the United States of America (USA), very little is known about their status in captivity or their effect on the veterinary field. A questionnaire containing 26 questions was submitted online to rabbit owners through a volunteer-based nonprofit organization in the USA (House Rabbit Society [HRS]). A total of 959 owners answered the survey, with most respondents being located within the USA. The study aimed to evaluate pet rabbit owners ׳ self-reported perceptions and experiences regarding varying aspects of rabbit husbandry (e.g., health status and nutrition), as we...

Chylous Ascites in 2 Ferrets
The purpose of this report is to describe 2 cases of chylous ascites (CA) in ferrets. In the first patient, CA was likely secondary to an obstruction of lymphatic drainage due to lymphoma; and in the second patient, CA developed as a postoperative complication of adrenal carcinoma with multiple metastases. In both cases, CA was diagnosed based on the concentration of triglycerides and cholesterol in the abdominal fluid. Medical treatment resulted in partial remission of the CA in the first case; however, the patient suffered an acute death approximately 3 weeks following its initial presenation. Ureteral Stenosis Following Ovariohysterectomy in a Rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus)
A 2.5-year-old female rabbit was presented with a history of intermittent anorexia and gastrointestinal stasis. An ovariohysterectomy was performed 9 months prior to the initial presentation for gastrointestinal problems. At 15 months post ovariohysterectomy, abdominal radiographic images and ultrasonography revealed an enlarged left kidney with a dilated pelvis and ureter. During a laparotomy procedure adhesions were identified between the broad ligament of the uterus and the middle section of the left ureter, causing obstruction of urine flow. Radial Hemimelia in a Domestic Rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus)
A 1-month-old, intact female domestic rabbit was presented with a history of acute right hind limb lameness due to a traumatic injury. Physical examination revealed right elbow luxation, varus deviation, and a reduction in antebrachial length. Radiographic imaging of the affected limb revealed lateral right elbow luxation, radial agenesis, right first digit agenesis, and malformation of the right carpal bones and sternum. The patient ′s diagnosis based on the presenting clinical signs and radiographic evaluation was determined to be right preaxial longitudinal intercalary radial hemimelia, partial adactyly, and multiple ...

Anal Sac Adenocarcinoma with Metastases and Hypercalcemia in a Ferret (Mustela putorius furo)
An 8-year-old, spayed female domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo) was presented for evaluation of anal prolapse and bilateral enlarged anal sacs. A lobulated mass in the right perianal area was detected during the physical examination. Results of diagnostic blood testing were decreased glucose, potassium and phosphorus concentrations, and increased total and ionized calcium concentrations. Complete resection of the mass was not possible due to its close proximity with the rectum and the ventral aspect of the tail. (Source: Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine)

Veterinary care of scorpions
The care of terrestrial invertebrates as pets, in zoological displays, or for scientific reasons is increasing, therefore veterinarians and technicians must be prepared for this demand. There are approximately 1600 species of scorpions, with many being maintained in captive environs. Scorpions represent a public health concern in numerous locals worldwide, which enhances the demand for research investigations. Consequently there is an increased demand for scorpions along with how to properly care for these animals in captivity. (Source: Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine)

Hepatic Encephalopathy in a Red-Tailed Boa (Boa Constrictor Imperator)
A 5-year-old female red-tailed boa (Boa constrictor imperator) was presented for abnormal neurologic behavior. Ultrasound examination revealed an enlarged liver, with rounded margins and hypoechoic areas. A complete snake virus polymerase chain reaction (PCR) profile was performed together with diagnostic blood testing. The snake virus PCR profile results were negative. Supportive treatment for the patient consisted of fluid therapy and nutritional support, supplemented with carnitine. Lactulose was administered orally every 24 hours. Use of standing computed tomography for the diagnosis of a primary respiratory adenocarcinoma in a scarlet macaw (ara macao)
An adult female scarlet macaw (Ara macao) was referred for evaluation of increased respiratory noise. Previous treatment with antibiotic agents by the referring veterinarian did not improve clinical signs. Upon presentation, when manually restrained, the patient became severely tachypneic with increased respiratory effort. Standing whole body radiographic images revealed a soft-tissue mass at the cranial aspect of the cardiac silhouette, but the origin of the mass could not be ascertained due to superimposed structures. Cefovecin pharmacokinetics in the red-eared slider
The administration of long-acting antimicrobial agents to treat susceptible bacterial infections in exotic animals is desirable as it may reduce handling stress, increase therapeutic compliance, and decrease morbidity and mortality. Cefovecin sodium, a third generation cephalosporin, is administered to treat susceptible bacterial infections in dogs and cats. Cefovecin has an extended dosing interval partially due to increased ability to bind with plasma protein. As such, investigations into the pharmacokinetics of this antibiotic have been conducted in zoo and exotic animal species, including terrestrial chelonians. (Sourc...
