The association between housing cost burden and avoidable mortality in wealthy countries: cross-national analysis of social and housing policies, 2000-2017
Conclusion Our findings suggest that housing cost burden can be related to population health. Future studies should examine the role of protective measures that alleviate health problems caused by housing cost burden. (Source: Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health)

Environmental health justice across the globe
Disenfranchised and disadvantaged communities face challenges across the globe. These communities are more likely to be poor and minority, disproportionately exposed to harmful environmental pollutants and require equal access to healthcare. The environmental justice (EJ) movement aims to improve and maintain a clean and healthy environment by ensuring healthy air, water and soil. Two unlikely areas for comparison are Louisville, Kentucky, in North America and Blantyre, Malawi, in Africa, two worlds apart with different, yet similar, environmental issues. The EJ movement was primarily initiated by another North American co...

Neighbourhood risk factors of recurrent tuberculosis in Cape Town: a cohort study using geocoded notification data
Conclusion Recurrent TB was associated with increased household size and TB burden at neighbourhood level. These findings could be used to target TB screening activities. (Source: Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health)

Socioeconomic position over the life course and impaired lung function of older adults in Central and Eastern Europe: the HAPIEE study
Conclusion Reducing socioeconomic inequalities in young and late adulthood may contribute to reducing the risk of impaired lung function in late adulthood. (Source: Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health)

Stair-related falls in the USA: traumatic brain injury and the role of alcohol intoxication
Conclusions Stair-related falls represent a common cause of ED visits for falls in the USA. Alcohol intoxication had a detrimental effect on the prevalence of TBI and CMF. A multimodal treatment approach may be beneficial given the complex interrelationship between the injury type and alcohol. (Source: Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health)

Mental health inequalities in times of crisis: evolution between 2005 and 2021 among the Spanish salaried population
Conclusion This study shows a steep worsening of mental health among the salaried population in 2021 compared with previous periods. In 2021, health inequalities have apparently narrowed, although not by improving the disadvantaged groups’ mental health but by worsening the typically advantaged groups’ mental health. Impact of the Finnish Maternity Grant on infant mortality rates in the 20th century: a natural experimental study
Conclusions While we observed changes in IMRs associated with Maternity Grant introduction and universalisation, these changes cannot be disentangled from the impact of the Second World War or other relevant policy developments on infant mortality. Consequently, the relationship between the Finnish Baby Box or comparable contemporary interventions and infant mortality remains unclear. (Source: Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health)

Investigating the association between income inequality in youth and deaths of despair in Canada: a population-based cohort study from 2006 to 2019
Conclusion The results show that higher levels of income inequality in youth are associated with an increased hazard of all-cause death, deaths of despair and drug overdose in young Canadians. This study is the first to reveal the association between income inequality and deaths of despair in youth and does so using a population-based longitudinal cohort involving multilevel data. The results of this study can inform policies related to income inequality and deaths of despair in Canada. (Source: Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health)

Investigating the impact of a 20 miles per hour speed limit intervention on road traffic collisions, casualties, speed and volume in Belfast, UK: 3 year follow-up outcomes of a natural experiment
Conclusion A 20 mph speed limit intervention implemented at city centre scale had little impact on long-term outcomes including road traffic collisions, casualties and speed, except for a reduction in traffic volume. Policymakers considering implementing 20 mph speed limit interventions should consider the fidelity, context and scale of implementation. (Source: Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health)

Inequalities in COVID-19 deaths by migration background during the first wave, interwave period and second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic: a closed cohort study of 17 million inhabitants of the Netherlands
Conclusions Differences in COVID-19 deaths by migration background persisted in the second wave despite introduction of COVID-19 prevention measures targeted at populations with a migration background in the second wave. Research on explanatory mechanisms and novel prevention measures are needed to address the ongoing differences in COVID-19 deaths by migration background. Epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 during the first three waves in Scotland: a national record linkage study
Conclusions Despite the higher number of cases reported in waves 2 and 3, case fatality rates were lower: likely a combination of improved detection of infections in younger age groups, introduction of social measures and vaccination. Higher social deprivation and comorbidities resulted in higher deaths for all waves. (Source: Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health)

Pregnant refugees during the first days of Russian invasion of Ukraine
A high number of refugees are coming into the territory of the neighbouring countries because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Almost all of them are women and children. It is also not surprising that many of them are pregnant. Przemyśl is a Polish town near the Polish-Ukrainian border and is currently the essential evacuation route for people fleeing Ukraine. Between 24 February and 10 March 2022, a total of 712 244 people, including 653 882 women and children, crossed the border. Up to 7240 women required medical support, 286 were hospitalised and 74 were pregnant. The leading causes of hospitalisation were del...

Bearing the burden of austerity: how do changing mortality rates in the UK compare between men and women?
Conclusions It remains unclear whether there are sex differences in UK austerity-related health effects. Nonetheless, this study provides further evidence of adverse trends in the UK and the associated scale of excess deaths. There is a clear need for such policies to be reversed, and for policies to be implemented to protect the most vulnerable in society. (Source: Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health)

Associations between cohort study participation and self-reported health and well-being: the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 Study
Conclusions The findings indicate that participation activity is associated with better self-reported health and well-being, especially among women. With this knowledge, people can be encouraged to participate in longitudinal health research and, at the same time, may improve their own health and quality of life.
