Loss of Endothelial Barrier Antigen Immunoreactivity in Rat Retinal Microvessels is Correlated with Clostridium perfringens Type D Epsilon Toxin-induced Damage to the Blood –Retinal Barrier
Publication date: January 2018 Source:Journal of Comparative Pathology, Volume 158 Author(s): K.A. Mander, J.W. Finnie Clostridium perfringens type D epsilon toxin (ETX) is a potent neurotoxin producing a severe, and often fatal, neurological disorder in ruminant livestock. Microvascular damage appears to be the fundamental action of ETX in the brain and, recently, similar vascular injury, with subsequent severe vasogenic oedema, has been reported in the retina of rats given ETX. Endothelial barrier antigen (EBA) is a useful marker of an intact blood–brain barrier in rats and it has been shown that loss of EBA immun...

Cytomegalic Inclusion Disease caused by Cytomegalovirus Infection in the Salivary Glands of  an African Hedgehog (Atelerix arbiventris)
We examined the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands of a 1-year-old male African hedgehog. Histologically, there were multiple foci composed of cytomegalic cells with intranuclear inclusion bodies. Ultrastructurally, viral particles (109–118 nm in diameter) were observed in the nuclei of the cytomegalic cells. There were numerous vesicles containing various numbers of enveloped viruses in the cytoplasm. We also attempted to detect viral DNA fragments by degenerate polymerase chain reaction and obtained amplicons of a predicted size. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the virus is a betaherpesvirus, compa...
