12 Hour Shifts: Literature Reviewed, Wise Use Challenged
ABSTRACT: Concern is reported about the negative outcomes of 12-hour shifts for nurses, including sleep-deprived fatigue, negative neurobehavioral outcomes, and patient safety. However, 12-hour shifts remain the prevailing staffing method. When should the concern for nurses' health and well-being be factored into staffing decisions? If the 12-hour model was used more wisely, that is, nurses were not working too much and/or too long, would there be a need for change? Will nurses and researchers pursue ways to address the negative outcomes of 12-hour shifts? (Source: Journal of Christian Nursing)

Using Reflective Practice to Understand LGBTQ Client Needs
ABSTRACT: Nurse practitioners as well as all nurses need to assess their values, be knowledgeable of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer issues and current guidelines of care, and communicate with clients and their families in such a way as to create trusting and safe environments, free from barriers for quality healthcare. Nursing literature supports reflective practice as a means of reducing bias, as well as improving patient–provider trust and quality care. Understanding the primary care needs of specific populations is necessary to fulfill the nursing code of ethics. (Source: Journal of Christian Nursing)

Abstinence-Only Sex Education Fails African American Youth
ABSTRACT: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) disproportionately affect U.S. African American (AA) youth. In AA faith communities, cultural practices have contributed to increased STI rates because abstinence-only-until-marriage education programs do not teach the use of condoms or birth control for preventing STIs or pregnancy. Comprehensive sex education or abstinence-plus programs have been reported to increase STI knowledge and reduce risk-taking behaviors in adolescents and young adults. Evidence supports computerized education to increase STI knowledge and decrease risky sexual behaviors of AA churchgoing youth. (...
