Decreased anterior cingulate activation in a motor task in youths with bipolar disorder
ConclusionsThese findings suggest a potential common mechanism of impaired ACC modulation between emotion dysregulation and motor processing in youths with BP. (Source: Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry)

Editorial Perspective: Integrating exploratory and competitive –confirmatory approaches to testing person × environment interactions
Students of child development and of psychopathology have long been interested in how person characteristics (e.g. genotype, temperament) might moderate the effect of environmental exposures (e.g. harsh parenting, negative life events) on development. Historically, most such research on person × environment interaction has been guided by diathesis‐stress thinking, which stipulates that some individuals, due to their personal characteristics, are more susceptible to the adverse effects of contextual risk than are others (but do not function differently under supportive or even benign conditions). ‘Shine bright like a diamond!’: is research on high‐functioning ADHD at last entering the mainstream?
The paper by Greven and colleagues (this issue) is intensifying discussion how research on attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can be moved away from the deficit‐focused view to a concept, which is oriented towards resources a patient might be able to recruit to function at a high‐level despite impairments. To promote understanding of high‐functioning (HF)‐ADHD, more longitudinal studies are required employing neuropsychologic, neuroimaging and neurobiologic approaches, with focus on compensatory mechanisms during fronto‐striatal‐amygdala maturation and adult plasticity as well as epigenetic modif...

Delay aversion in attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder is mediated by amygdala and prefrontal cortex hyper ‐activation
ConclusionsWhen presented with cues predicting impending delay, adolescents with ADHD, relative to controls, displayed a delay‐related increase in activation in amygdala and DLPFC, regions known to be implicated in the processing of aversive events. Future studies should examine the specificity of these effects to delay aversion compared to aversive events in general. (Source: Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry)

Foster care promotes adaptive functioning in early adolescence among children who experienced severe, early deprivation
ConclusionsThis study provides causal evidence that placing children into families following severe deprivation increases the likelihood of adaptive functioning in early adolescence. (Source: Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry)

Maternal sensitivity to distress, attachment and the  development of callous‐unemotional traits in young children
ConclusionsThe finding of contributions from both sensitivity to distress and positive regard to reduced CU traits suggests that children's responsiveness to others’ emotions may be increased by their own mothers’ responsiveness to them and their mothers’ warmth. There was no evidence that this was mediated via attachment status. Implications for intervention and future directions are discussed. (Source: Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry)
