Impact of advanced imaging techniques on cardiac surgery —New insights provided by cardiac magnetic resonance
AbstractThis dialog between a cardiac surgeon (C.L.) and cardiac imager (J.W.W.) provides an overview of cardiac MRI (CMR) methods relevant to cardiac surgery. Major areas of focus include logistics of performing a CMR exam, as well as established and emerging methods for assessment of cardiac structure, function, valvular performance, and tissue characterization. Regarding tissue characterization, a major area of focus concerns CMR assessment of viability, for which this modality has been shown to provide incremental utility to conventional techniques for detection of presence and transmural extent of infarction, as well ...

Influence of cardioplegic solution on incidence of delirium after CABG surgery: Use of Calafiore blood cardioplegia versus  HTK ‐ Bretschneider ‐ solution in a single‐center retrospective analysis from 2017 to 2021
ConclusionThe present data suggest an impact of the cardioplegic solution used upon postoperative delirium rates. Optimization of cardiac arrest protocols is needed. Present data encourage further prospective studies regarding the impact of cardioplegic solutions on electrolyte imbalance for postoperative delirium rates in CABG surgery. Endovascular therapy for acute ischemic stroke after cardiac surgery: Why  not?
AbstractThere are few publications regarding the use of endovascular therapy (EVT) for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) secondary to large vessel occlusion (LVO) after cardiac surgery. In the manuscript entitled “Endovascular Thrombectomy for Large Vessel Occlusion Acute Ischemic Stroke after Cardiac Surgery,” Gupta et al. report their experience with EVT for AIS after cardiac surgery. Failing Fontan cardiovascular support: Review
ConclusionThe end game for these patients remains a heart transplant. Without easy access to donors, each of the options discussed is a potential bridge to limit morbidity and mortality until a suitable donor heart becomes available. (Source: Journal of Cardiac Surgery)

Minimally invasive versus sternotomy approach for double ‐patch repair of partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection and sinus venosus defect in pediatric and adult patients: Mid to long‐term outcomes
ConclusionsThe minimally invasive approach can be a safe and practical alternative for the double-patch repair of PAPVC and SVD. It ensures a repair with comparable quality to sternotomy, but with better cosmetic and psychological outcomes. (Source: Journal of Cardiac Surgery)

Redo heart transplantation in a high ‐risk patient due to severe aortic regurgitation and accompanying right ventricular failure after LVAD implantation and temporary RVAD support
ConclusionSevere aortic regurgitation is a recognizable complication after cf-LVAD implantation which in our case was managed successfully with orthotopic heart transplantation in this high-risk patient. (Source: Journal of Cardiac Surgery)

The HeartMate 3 left ventricular assist device as a strategy to bridge to transplant
ConclusionsThe HM3 is a viable method for BTT with acceptable waitlist outcomes. Although 1-year survival is comparable to primary OHT, early outcomes are worse, suggesting that refinement of patient selection and perioperative management is prudent to optimizing outcomes. Evaluation of aortopulmonary window using virtual dissection of multidetector computed tomography angiography data sets
ConclusionAortopulmonary window is associated with a wide gamut of cardiovascular lesions, with ventricular septal defect being the commonest associated anomaly followed by tetralogy of Fallot and interrupted aortic arch respectively. Virtual dissection of multidetector CT angiography allows detailed anatomical evaluation of aortopulmonary window, allowing a clear visualization of the defect and associated cardiovascular anomalies. Survival and readmission among patients with advanced cardiomyopathy undergoing transcatheter edge ‐to‐edge mitral valve repair: Are we applying COAPT findings too broadly?
ConclusionPatients at extremes of heart failure who underwent TEER had poor outcomes when assessed at 1-year. Our study may suggest that the results of cardiovascular outcomes assessment of the mitraclip percutaneous therapy for heart failure patients with secondary mitral regurgitation may not be applicable to patients with severe cardiomyopathy.
