The Validity and Reliability of the Turkish Version of the Autism Family Experience Questionnaire (AFEQ)
In conclusion, the translated and culturally adapted AFEQ shows good reliability and validity to measure the priorities of autistic children and their families in Turkey. It can also be useful in monitoring the effectiveness of intervention programs and changes in the child.PMID:38459280 | DOI:10.1007/s10803-024-06264-y (Source: Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders)

Friendship in Autism Spectrum Disorder Is Related to Diverse Developmental Changes Between Toddlerhood and Adolescence
CONCLUSION: This long-term study highlights that for children with ASD, longitudinal growth in social communication and adaptive functioning is possible, highly important for and related to the development of the complex ability to establish friendship.PMID:38456995 | DOI:10.1007/s10803-024-06284-8 (Source: Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders)

A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial of Motivation-Based Social Skills Group Treatment with Parent Training
This study provides preliminary support for the efficacy of a naturalistic, behavioral social skills intervention to improve peer initiations for children with ASD. The findings suggest that using a motivation-based social skills group was effective in increasing both prompted and spontaneous initiations to peers, and highlights the need for further research into the role of baseline social motivation in predicting social skills treatment response.PMID:38446265 | DOI:10.1007/s10803-024-06302-9 (Source: Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders)

Quicker Exogenous Orienting and Slower Endogenous Orienting in Autistic People
This study investigated two types of attention orienting in autistic people and accounted for the potential confounders of alerting level, co-occurring symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and anxiety, age, and sex. Twenty-seven autistic participants (14 males; 9-43 years) and 22 age- and sex-matched non-autistic participants (13 males; 9-42 years) completed the exogenous and endogenous Posner tasks. Response time and pupillometric data were recorded. Autistic participants were faster at orienting attention to valid cues in the exogenous task and slower at disengaging from invalid cues in the endogen...

Intolerance of Uncertainty and Anxiety (but not Alexithymia) Mediate the Association Between Autistic Traits and Quality of Life
This study tested a hypothesised model to explore how 'intolerance of uncertainty' (IU), alexithymia (difficulty in identifying and describing own emotions), and anxiety play into the association between autistic traits and QoL. Online survey data were analysed from 116 autistic and 51 non-autistic adults who completed six standardised questionnaires measuring autistic traits, alexithymia, IU, anxiety and QoL (physical health, psychological health, social relations, and environment domains). The autistic group reported higher scores for alexithymia, IU and anxiety, and lower scores for QoL across domains, compared to the n...

Exploring Latine Parent Leaders' and a Program Coordinator's Lived Experiences with a Culturally Adapted Parent-Directed Training Program
J Autism Dev Disord. 2024 Mar 5. doi: 10.1007/s10803-024-06270-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe purpose of the current study was to explore the lived experiences among parent leaders and a program coordinator who participated in a parent-directed training program to support other Latine parents of children with autism spectrum disorder. We used qualitative methods to explore 4 Latine parent leaders' and 1 program coordinator's experiences with a parent-directed training program to support other Latine parents who have children with autism spectrum disorder. We interviewed parent leaders and a program coordinator to lea...

Sensorimotor Features and Daily Living Skills in Autistic Children With and Without ADHD
J Autism Dev Disord. 2024 Mar 5. doi: 10.1007/s10803-024-06256-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAttention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) commonly co-occurs in autistic children. However, additional research is needed to explore the differences in motor skills and sensory features in autistic children with and without ADHD, as well as the impacts of these factors on daily living skills (DLS). This observational study sought to fill this gap with 67 autistic children (6.14-10.84 years-old), 43 of whom had ADHD. Autistic children with ADHD demonstrated higher sensory features and lower motor skills than autistic childr...

Investigating the Effects of Transdiagnostic Processes on Anxiety and Depression Symptoms in Autistic Young People: the Mediating Role of Emotion Dysregulation
J Autism Dev Disord. 2024 Mar 4. doi: 10.1007/s10803-024-06246-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInternalising symptoms are elevated in autism compared to the general population. Few studies have investigated emotional dysregulation (ED) as a potential mediator between specific transdiagnostic processes and anxiety and depression symptoms in autistic youth. In a sample of 94 autistic young people aged 5-18 years referred to a specialist clinic for an autism evaluation, we tested the effects of ED as a mediator between cognitive inflexibility (CI), intolerance of uncertainty (IU) and alexithymia with anxiety and depression s...

Psychometric Assessment of the Rett Syndrome Caregiver Assessment of Symptom Severity (RCASS)
We report on a new caregiver-reported outcome measure, the Rett Caregiver Assessment of Symptom Severity (RCASS). Using data from the Rett Natural History Study (n = 649), we examined the factor structure, using both exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, and the reliability and validity of the RCASS. The four-factor model had the best overall fit, which covered movement, communication, behavior, and Rett-specific symptoms. The RCASS had moderate internal consistency. Strong face validity was found with age and mutation type, and convergent validity was established with other similar measures, including the Revised ...

Autistic Individuals Do Not Alter Visual Processing Strategy During Encoding Versus Recognition of Faces: A Hidden Markov Modeling Approach
CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that autistic individuals do not modulate their visual processing strategy across encoding and recognition of faces, which may be an indicator of less efficient face processing.PMID:38430386 | DOI:10.1007/s10803-024-06259-9 (Source: Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders)
