Longitudinal Follow-Up Study of Social Intervention Outcomes for Children on the Autism Spectrum
This study tested longer-term maintenance of effects for children who completed both interventions. A total of 103 children (ages 6-12 years) on the autism spectrum enrolled and 102 completed the initial RCT. Following the summer social intervention, 90 children from the original RCT completed the longer-term follow-up study. In addition to baseline and posttest in the initial RCT, children from both groups were tested at three follow-up points (five total testing points). At the time of first longitudinal follow-up testing, the children were 1.25-4.25 years post-intervention (ages 8-15 years). Longitudinal multilevel mode...

Valence and Intensity of Emotional Expression in Autistic and Non-Autistic Toddlers
CONCLUSION: Findings emphasize that differences may be more apparent in duration, rather than intensity of emotional expression, and that it may be particularly important to examine periods of "neutral" affect in young autistic children. Future research should consider the best ways to understand emotional reactivity in this population considering their unique interests, challenges, and communication styles.PMID:38315319 | DOI:10.1007/s10803-024-06268-8 (Source: Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders)

Atypical Impact of Action Effect Delay on Motor Performance in Autism
J Autism Dev Disord. 2024 Feb 5. doi: 10.1007/s10803-023-06227-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAtypical sensory perception and motor impairments are primary features of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that indicate atypical development and predict social and non-social challenges. However, their link is poorly understood. Sensory perception is often integrated with motor processes when a sensory effect is temporally contiguous with the motor response. Such sensory-motor coupling further improves motor behavior. Previous studies indicate alterations in sensory perception of action-effect temporal contiguity in ASD, which ba...

Examining the Authenticity of Autistic Portrayals in US Adult and Children's Television Shows Using Medical and Social Models of Disability
This study explores how autistic portrayals across six adult and children's television programs align with the medical (e.g., American Psychiatric Association in Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, 5th ed., text rev., 2022, https://doi.org/10.1176/appi.books.9780890425787 ) and social models of disability. A content analysis methodology was used to investigate defining characteristics of autism (i.e., medical model) and how characters navigated their environment (i.e., social model) in 252 scenes (across six characters in 22 episodes). Measures included the frequency with which autism characteristics (e....

Enhancing Diagnostic Follow-up and Care Coordination for Children with Autism in a Busy Resident Continuity Clinic: Leveraging the Electronic Health Record
CONCLUSION: Through explicit scheduling pathways and a novel EHR template, we saw a significant increase in ASD-specific follow-up visits and implementation of best practices for ASD care, demonstrating a new process for training and engaging primary care providers in clear action steps for post-diagnostic care without having to rely on tertiary referrals.PMID:38289527 | DOI:10.1007/s10803-024-06253-1 (Source: Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders)

Developing a Measure of Key Adult Outcomes in Adults with Developmental Disabilities: Conceptual Model and Item Generation of the REALS (Relationships, Employment, Autonomy, and Life Satisfaction)
This study developed a conceptual model of relationships, work, and autonomy specific to adults with IDDs. Future work will involve collecting data from 800 + self-reporters with IDDs and 800 + caregivers of adults with IDDs to conduct psychometric analyses. Improving measurement in this area is critical to better understanding the needs of adults with IDDs and improving services available to them.PMID:38291244 | DOI:10.1007/s10803-023-06219-9 (Source: Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders)

A Double-Blind Randomised Controlled Trial of Prebiotic Supplementation in Children with Autism: Effects on Parental Quality of Life, Child Behaviour, Gastrointestinal Symptoms, and the Microbiome
CONCLUSION: Prebiotics modify levels of Bifidobacterium and prove well tolerated but in this instance, resulted in only marginal effects on GI symptoms and pQOL. A larger sample of children with more severe symptoms could help to determine the potential of prebiotics in autism.TRIAL REGISTRATION: https://www.anzctr.org.au/Trial/Registration/TrialReview.aspx?ACTRN=12619000615189 .PMID:38291245 | DOI:10.1007/s10803-024-06239-z (Source: Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders)

Describing Outcomes in Autistic Young Adults One Year After High School Graduation
CONCLUSION: Tailoring outcome measurement approaches specifically for autistic young adults provided a more optimistic portrayal of outcomes than previously noted in the literature. The approach used better reflects a neurodiversity approach and may be useful for evaluating the effectiveness of transition services or interventions.PMID:38285097 | DOI:10.1007/s10803-023-06152-x (Source: Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders)

The Association between Threatened Miscarriage and Autism Spectrum Disorder and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Offspring by Age 14 Years

Coherence of Parental Representations Following Therapy for Autistic Children
J Autism Dev Disord. 2024 Jan 28. doi: 10.1007/s10803-024-06252-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAutistic children experience high rates of mental health challenges, and links have been found between child mental health and the parent-child relationship. As parents of autistic children are often actively involved in their child's treatment, it is important to consider aspects of the parent-child relationship within this context. The present study investigated changes in a component of the parent-child relationship, the coherence of parental representations, following participation in a 10-week cognitive behavioural therapy...
