A Systematic Literature Review of Racial Disproportionality in Autism in the U.S
J Autism Dev Disord. 2024 Feb 28. doi: 10.1007/s10803-024-06247-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn recent years, the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network has observed a shift in racial disparities in autism. To delineate the historical shift of racial disproportionality in US autism prevalence, our literature review examines three key topics: publication trends concerning racial disproportionality in autism, discernible national and state-level patterns, and underlying factors contributing to the disproportionality. Using the PRISMA framework, we synthesized 24 empirical studies on racial disproportion...

Measuring Developmental Delays: Comparison of Parent Report and Direct Testing
CONCLUSION: The high convergent validity found in this study suggests that the DP-4 provides a suitable proxy for direct developmental testing using the MSEL in the context of telehealth evaluations for ASD in young children, delivering a good estimate of both developmental functioning and presence of delays.TRIAL REGISTRATION: Data were obtained from registered clinical trial NCT05047224, date of registration 2021-09-07.PMID:38407697 | DOI:10.1007/s10803-024-06292-8 (Source: Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders)

Foundations of Vocal Category Development in Autistic Infants
J Autism Dev Disord. 2024 Feb 25. doi: 10.1007/s10803-024-06267-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe present study compared the infant's tendency in the first year of life to produce clusters of particular vocal types (squeals, vocants, and growls) in typically developing (TD) and autistic infants. Vocal clustering provides evidence of vocal category formation and may establish a foundation for speech development. Specifically, we compared the extent of vocal clustering across outcome groups and age groups. We also examined the associations between the extent of vocal clustering and later outcomes at 2 years within the aut...

"Giving Me the Self-Confidence to Tackle It": Mothers' Experiences Participating In The Engaged Eaters Program, A Caregiver-Mediated Feeding Intervention
J Autism Dev Disord. 2024 Feb 24. doi: 10.1007/s10803-024-06250-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study was to understand caregivers' experience of participating in a caregiver-mediated in-home feeding intervention, the Engaged Eaters Program, for their young autistic child. This qualitative study utilized a thematic approach to analyze post-intervention semi-structured interviews with thirteen mothers of autistic children between the ages of 2 to 7 years after they participated in the intervention. Interview questions focused on the child and family experience, what worked well, what could be improved, ...

Validating the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health Core Sets for Autism in a Sample of Australian School-Aged Children on the Spectrum
This study combined the ICF-CSs for autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and cerebral palsy (CP) to validate the ICF-CSs for autism in an Australian sample of school-aged children. This cross-sectional study involved caregivers of school-aged children on the spectrum (n = 70) completing an online survey and being visited in their homes by an occupational therapist to complete the proxy-report measure based on the ICF-CSs for autism, ADHD and CP. Absolute and relative frequencies of ratings for each of the codes included in the measure were calculated and reported, along with the number of participants wh...

Correlation Between Gaze Behaviors and Social Communication Skills of Young Autistic Children: A Meta-Analysis of Eye-Tracking Studies
J Autism Dev Disord. 2024 Feb 24. doi: 10.1007/s10803-024-06257-x. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis meta-analysis examined correlations between eye-tracking measures of gaze behaviors manifested during dynamic salient social stimuli and behavioral assessment measures of social communication skills of young autistic children. We employed a multilevel model with random effects to perform three separate meta-analyses for correlation between social communication skills and (a) all gaze behaviors, (b) gaze duration, and (c) gaze transition. Subsequently, we performed meta-regression to assess the role of four moderators, incl...

The Economic Impacts of COVID-19 on Autistic Children and Their Families
CONCLUSION: Federal relief efforts likely improved economic outcomes of children; however, these effects varied according to type of hardship and by disability group. Efforts to promote economic well-being among autistic populations should be tailored to the financial challenges most salient to low-income autistic children, like food insecurity.PMID:38393434 | DOI:10.1007/s10803-024-06280-y (Source: Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders)

Schizophrenia in Autistic People with Intellectual Disabilities. Treatment and Interventions
J Autism Dev Disord. 2024 Feb 23. doi: 10.1007/s10803-024-06286-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAutistic people with intellectual disabilities appear to be at increased risk of schizophrenia. While current recommendations emphasize adapting interventions used for people with schizophrenia in general, few studies to date have investigated treatment of co-occurring schizophrenia in this specific population. To explore what interventions are provided to autistic people with intellectual disabilities and co-occurring schizophrenia in specialized mental health services, and to investigate whether changes in mental health sympt...

The Comprehension of Grammatical Structures in a Pediatric Population with ASD and Epilepsy: A Comparative Study
J Autism Dev Disord. 2024 Feb 23. doi: 10.1007/s10803-024-06291-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAutism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and epilepsy represent a comorbidity that negatively influences the proper development of linguistic competencies, particularly in receptive language, in the pediatric population. This group displays impairments in the auditory comprehension of both simple and complex grammatical structures, significantly limiting their performance in language-related activities, hampering their integration into social contexts, and affecting their quality of life. The main objective of this study was to assess au...

Detecting Autism Spectrum Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Using Multimodal Time-Frequency Analysis with Machine Learning Using the Electroretinogram from Two Flash Strengths
CONCLUSION: The ERG to the stronger flash strength provided better separation and the high frequency dynamics (80-300 Hz) were more informative features than lower frequency components. To further improve classification a greater number of different flash strengths may be required along with a discrimination comparison to participants who meet both ASD and ADHD classifications and carry both diagnoses.PMID:38393437 | DOI:10.1007/s10803-024-06290-w (Source: Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders)
