Evaluation of Hip/Height(P) Ratio as an Index for Adiposity and Metabolic Complications in Obese Children: Comparison with Waist-related Indices.
CONCLUSION: Hip/height and BAIp are better markers for overweight (adiposity) in obese children than BAI. However, hip/height, BAIp, and BAI are not useful to predict metabolic complications. Waist appears to be the best index for obese children overall at this time. PMID: 27298049 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Journal of Atherosclerosis and Thrombosis)

Elevated CETP Lipid Transfer Activity is Associated with the Risk of Venous Thromboembolism.
CONCLUSIONS: Elevated CETP lipid transfer activity in plasma was associated with the risk of VTE. Gln451-CETP, which is linked to VTE, has much higher procoagulant activity than wt-CETP. CETP might act as a physiologic procoagulant by mechanisms that involve its direct binding to factor Xa. MTP Gene Variants and Response to Lomitapide in Patients with Homozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia.
Authors: Kolovou GD, Kolovou V, Papadopoulou A, Watts GF Abstract Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH) is a rare genetic disorder, which leads to premature cardiovascular diseases. Microsomal triglyceride transport protein (MTP) inhibitors, such as lomitapide, offer a new therapeutic approach for treating these patients. We evaluated the lipid lowering (LL) efficacy of lomitapide according to several gene variants in MTP. Four clinically and/or molecularly defined HoFH patients were treated with lomitapide in addition to conventional high intensity LL therapy and regular lipoprotein apheresis. Two patien...

AICAR Attenuates TNFα-Induced Inappropriate Secretion of Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-1 and Adiponectin in 3T3-L1 Adipocytes.
CONCLUSION: AICAR attenuates the TNFα-induced secretion of MCP-1 and adiponectin in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. The observed effects of AICAR seem to be mainly due to the inhibition of NF-κB activation rather than the activation of the AMPK pathway, at least in TNFα-treated adipocytes. Adipocytokines in Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases.
Authors: Ouchi N Abstract Obesity, particularly excess visceral fat accumulation, is highly associated with the development of metabolic syndrome and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Adipose tissue produces a variety of secreted proteins, referred to as adipocytokines, which directly affect nearby or remote organs. Dysregulation of adipocytokines caused by obese conditions contributes to the pathogenesis of various metabolic and cardiovascular disorders. This review focuses on the significance of several adipocytokines that potentially exert beneficial actions on obesity-related diseases, including atheroscl...

Familial Hypercholesterolemia in Asian Populations.
Authors: Zhou M, Zhao D Abstract Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is the most common autosomal disorder characterized by an elevated low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol level and a high risk of premature cardiovascular disease. In this review, we summarize information on FH studies in Asian countries, focusing on mean cholesterol level, FH frequency, diagnostic criteria, genotypes, and clinical care of FH patients in Asian populations. Compared with Western countries, most Asian countries had lower mean cholesterol levels, with a significant variation between different countries. In the limited studies reported, ...

Circulating Immune Complexes of IgA Bound to Beta 2 Glycoprotein are Strongly Associated with the Occurrence of Acute Thrombotic Events.
CONCLUSION: B2A-CIC is strongly associated with acute TEV. Patients who did not develop thrombosis and were B2A-CIC positive had lower platelet levels, which suggest a hypercoagulable state. This mechanism is unrelated to complement-fixing aPL. B2A-CIC could potentially select IgA aB2GPI-positive patients at risk of developing a thrombotic event. Novel Endogenous Proresolving Molecules.
Authors: Shinohara M, Serhan CN Abstract Acute inflammation is a fundamental, protective response that orchestrates immune system to address harmful stimuli both from within and via invasion. New evidences indicate that the resolution of acute inflammation is not simply passive but active and highly regulated processes coordinated by new families of potent bioactive lipid mediators (LMs), coined specialized proresolving mediators (SPMs). These SPMs are biosynthesized from n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Low concentrations of SPM (nM range) stimulate proresolving cellular processes, such as inhibition of neutrophil...
