Giant lung cavity due to three different pathogens in a patient receiving inhaled salmeterol plus fluticasone propionate for asthma
CONCLUSION: Tuberculosis and other opportunistic infections are a potential consequence of inhaled corticosteroid use. Clinicians overseeing such patients need to be vigilant about the need for timely investigations about tuberculosis before and during prescribing medications containing inhaled corticosteroids.PMID:38078667 | DOI:10.1080/02770903.2023.2293069 (Source: Journal of Asthma)

AIM2 participates in house dust mite (HDM)-induced epithelial dysfunctions and ovalbumin (OVA)-induced allergic asthma in infant mice
In conclusion, AIM2, up-regulated in severe pediatric allergic asthma, participates in HDM-induced epithelial dysfunctions and OVA-induced allergic asthma progression. Therefore, AIM2 could be a promising target for pediatric allergic asthma treatment regimens, which warrants further in vivo investigations.PMID:38078661 | DOI:10.1080/02770903.2023.2289157 (Source: Journal of Asthma)

The Role of ACT Score in Mepolizumab Discontinuation
CONCLUSION: In this real-world study, we find that high eosinophil count may not be adequate in screening which individuals will benefit from mepolizumab. Up to 17% of patients fail therapy within 6 months, with male sex and low ACT score increasing risk of mepolizumab discontinuation at Cleveland Clinic.PMID:38064231 | DOI:10.1080/02770903.2023.2293067 (Source: Journal of Asthma)

Progressive clinical effects of the combination omalizumab and HDM - allergen immunotherapy in asthma
CONCLUSION: The combination of HDM SCIT and omalizumab is significantly and progressively reducing ICS use and AX in a 24-month study. The combination is significantly more effective than the single treatments or placebo.PMID:38064236 | DOI:10.1080/02770903.2023.2293057 (Source: Journal of Asthma)

Assessing the risk of intentional self-harm in montelukast users: an updated Sentinel System analysis using ICD-10 coding
CONCLUSION: Our results cannot exclude other neuropsychiatric idiosyncratic reactions to montelukast. Compared to the previous Sentinel study, this study identified about double the rate of self-harm events, suggesting a greater sensitivity of ICD-10 codes for measuring self-harm than ICD-9.PMID:38064517 | DOI:10.1080/02770903.2023.2293064 (Source: Journal of Asthma)

Characteristics of asthma in an older adult population according to sex and control level: Why are asthma symptoms in older women not well-controlled?
CONCLUSION: Herein, older adults comprised 11.5% of adult patients with asthma. Being female poses a disadvantage in terms of both asthma prevalence and control in the older adult asthmatic population owing to the prevalence of comorbidities and socioeconomic sex-related distinguishing factors.PMID:38060588 | DOI:10.1080/02770903.2023.2293062 (Source: Journal of Asthma)
