Intolerance of Uncertainty in Youth: Psychometrics of the Intolerance of Uncertainty Index-A for Children
Publication date: Available online 12 February 2020Source: Journal of Anxiety DisordersAuthor(s): Lara S. Rifkin, Philip C. KendallAbstractIntolerance of uncertainty (IU) is a cognitive vulnerability for pathological anxiety. The current study adapted the Intolerance of Uncertainty Index-A for Children (IUI-A-C), and created a single-item Intolerance of Uncertainty Clinician-Rated Index (IUCR), both of which assess a youth’s general inability to endure uncertainty. Psychometric properties of these two measures were evaluated. Participants were 146 youth aged 7-17 years seeking treatment for anxiety. The IUI-A-C evidenced...

Extending our Understanding of the Association between Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Positive Emotion Dysregulation: A Network Analysis Approach
Publication date: Available online 12 February 2020Source: Journal of Anxiety DisordersAuthor(s): Nicole H. Weiss, Ateka A. Contractor, Alexa M. Raudales, Talya Greene, Nicole A. ShortAbstractPosttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has empirically-established associations with positive emotion dysregulation. Extending existing research, we utilized a network approach to examine relations between PTSD symptom clusters (intrusions, avoidance, negative alterations in cognitions and mood [NACM], alterations in arousal and reactivity [AAR]) and positive emotion dysregulation dimensions (nonacceptance, impulse control, goal-directe...

Publication date: Available online 11 February 2020Source: Journal of Anxiety DisordersAuthor(s): Keith D. Renshaw, Elizabeth S. Allen, Steffany J. Fredman, Sarah T. Giff, Catherine KernAbstractEmerging research reinforces the importance of partner accommodation in the interpersonal context of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A better understanding of partners’ motivations for accommodation is needed to help refine or design interventions that target accommodation. To explore partners’ motivations, we created the Reasons for Accommodation of PTSD Scale (RAPS) and evaluated it in 263 female partners of male Army so...

Comparison of Latent Typologies of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Depression Symptoms across Military Personnel from India and the US
Publication date: Available online 28 January 2020Source: Journal of Anxiety DisordersAuthor(s): Ateka A. Contractor, Nicole H. Weiss, Melissa R. Schick, Prathiba Natesan, Shannon Forkus, Rachita SharmaAbstractResearch has identified heterogeneous subgroups of individuals based on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression symptoms. Using data collected from veterans in India (N = 146) and U.S. (N = 194), we examined (1) best-fitting latent class solution; (2) multi-group invariance of the class solution; and (3) construct validity of optimal class solution. Results indicated that the optimal 4-class solut...

An Item Response Theory Analysis of the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5: Implications for DSM-5 and ICD-11
Publication date: Available online 24 January 2020Source: Journal of Anxiety DisordersAuthor(s): Madison W. Silverstein, Jessica M. Petri, Lindsay B. Kramer, Frank W. WeathersAbstractThe PTSD Checklist (PCL) is a widely used, extensively validated questionnaire for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The PCL was revised for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5; Friedman, 2013), and the updated version, the PCL-5, has continued the strong psychometric performance of the original version. To further explore the PCL-5’s psychometric properties, we used item response theory (IRT) to exa...

Family accommodation of anxiety in a community sample of children on the autism spectrum
This study aimed to investigate the relationship between parent and child anxiety levels and child autism characteristics on the four domains of family accommodation; Participation, Modification, Distress, and Consequence. A community sample (n = 132) of parents of children on the spectrum completed questionnaires on their child’s autism characteristics and anxiety symptomatology as well as their own levels of anxiety and family accommodation behaviours. Regression models identified specific aspects of child anxiety as well as parent anxiety as predictive of family accommodation, with the child’s difficulties with ...

A Systematic Review of Visual Avoidance of Faces in Socially Anxious Individuals: Influence of Severity, Type of Social Situation, and Development
Publication date: Available online 17 January 2020Source: Journal of Anxiety DisordersAuthor(s): Jiemiao Chen, Esther van den Bos, P. Michiel WestenbergAbstractAlthough visual avoidance of faces is a hallmark feature of social anxiety disorder (SAD) on clinical and theoretical grounds, empirical support is equivocal. This review aims to clarify under which conditions socially anxious individuals display visual avoidance of faces. Through a systematic search in Web of Science and PubMed up to March 2019 we identified 61 publications that met the inclusion criteria. We discuss the influence of three factors on the extent to ...

The Therapeutic Alliance in Exposure Therapy for Anxiety-Related Disorders: A Critical Review
Publication date: Available online 18 January 2020Source: Journal of Anxiety DisordersAuthor(s): Jennifer L. Buchholz, Jonathan S. AbramowitzAbstractThe therapeutic alliance has been the subject of a great deal of psychotherapy research, and evidence from numerous empirical studies suggests that a strong patient-therapist relationship predicts favorable treatment outcomes. Despite the consistency of the alliance outcome relationship across treatment modalities and diagnoses, little attention has been given to this potential prognostic indicator in exposure therapy for anxiety-related disorders. Given that exposure therapy ...

Depersonalization and derealization in embarrassing social interactions: An experience sampling study in social phobia, major depression and controls
ConclusionsThe study is the first to demonstrate in an ecologically valid manner that DP/DR regularly occur in relation to feelings of embarrassment in controls and in individuals suffering from SP or MDD. DP and DR might be responses to strong emotions, like embarrassment, or might be attempts at coping. The higher emergence of embarrassment itself might be viewed as an indicator of maladaptation. Treatment interventions correcting for these misinterpretations might reduce DP/DR. (Source: Journal of Anxiety Disorders)
