A case of acquired Brown syndrome treated with adalimumab
We present the case of a 4-year-old boy with acquired Brown syndrome of inflammatory origin. Without evidence of systemic inflammation, the disease typically resolves with oral steroids or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Refractory cases can be treated with local steroid injections or surgery. The present case of inflammatory Brown syndrome did not respond to conservative therapy, and parental concerns and wishes precluded more invasive treatments. Adalimumab was initiated and led to complete resolution of the disease. (Source: Journal of American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus)

When pediatric acute acquired comitant esotropia is not caused by a neurological disease
ConclusionsIn our study cohort, pediatric AACE not accompanied by other ophthalmic and neurological abnormalities was not a manifestation of intracranial pathology. In such cases, the decision to perform neuroimaging should take into account other factors, including caregivers' preferences and availability for close monitoring. Prenatal diagnosis of intraconal lymphatic malformation on fetal magnetic resonance imaging
We report a case of prenatal diagnosis of an isolated unilateral retrobulbar lymphatic malformation with fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This was first detected at 27 weeks' gestational age. Postnatal ocular examinations at 4 days and 5 weeks of age showed no signs of optic nerve compromise. Postnatal MRI at 18 days of age showed slight increase in size of the lesion, and no intracranial vascular malformations were detected. Hussain, Audina M. Berrocal, Ta Chen ChangAn 18-year-old man with primary congenital glaucoma and buphthalmos in both eyes presented with unilateral, sudden-onset, painless vision loss. Bilateral simultaneous orbital hemorrhage and compartment syndrome as the presenting sign of acquired hemophilia A in an 11-year-old girl
Publication date: Available online 12 February 2020Source: Journal of American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and StrabismusAuthor(s): Raed Shatnawi, Samar Awni Shweiki, Arif O. KhanA previously healthy 11-year-old girl presented with bilateral orbital compartment syndrome secondary to retrobulbar hemorrhages requiring emergency cantholysis. Four days earlier she had sustained head trauma without symptoms until her acute presentation. A basic hematologic profile was remarkable for a prolonged partial thromboplastin time, which did not completely correct with a 1:1 mixing study. This result raised suspicion for the...

Cerebral visual impairment captured with a structured history inventory in extremely preterm born children aged 6.5 years
ConclusionsThe questionnaire discriminated well between children born EPT and controls, and the scores were congruent with other evidence of visual, perceptual, and cognitive deficits. The easily used questionnaire compared favorably with direct assessment in identifying CVI in children born EPT and also provides valuable information to clinicians, pedagogues, and parents about the daily life problems associated with CVI. Nanophthalmos in children: morphometric and clinical characterization
ConclusionsIn this study cohort, nanophthalmos was characterized by short axial length and high hyperopia, with shallow anterior chamber. Nearly 20% of children had occludable angles requiring intervention. Clinicians should monitor the ratio of lens thickness to axial length to ensure that angle closure is prevented. Blau syndrome following a bacterial infection
Publication date: Available online 8 February 2020Source: Journal of American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and StrabismusAuthor(s): Ahmad Sidiqi, Victor PegadoAn 11-month-old girl presented with dermatitis, boggy arthritis, and keratitis shortly after her hospitalization for bacterial pneumonia. A skin biopsy and genetic testing led to a diagnosis of Blau syndrome. Her symptoms persisted despite a stepwise increase in immune-modulating therapies. Her ocular findings advanced to include bilateral panuveitis, optic disk edema, and hypopigmented chorioretinitis. We speculate that the bacterial infection triggered a...
