102. Exploring Comprehensive Impacts for Sexual Minority Youth: A Cross-Sectional Assessment of a School District-Wide Inclusive Sex Education Intervention
Repeated studies have shown that sexual minority youth (SMY) report increased higher-risk sexual behaviors compared to their heterosexual peers, and researchers have correlated these disparities to non-inclusive sex education. Traditional school-based sex education has typically centered on abstinence or cisgender heterosexual sex, leaving out relevant information for SMY youth. In the context of growing state, national and international attention to comprehensive and SMY-inclusive sex education, Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) implemented a new week-long comprehensive and SMY-inclusive sex education curriculum in 2...

104. Comparisons of 2018 And 2022: How do We Talk to Teens About Sexual and Reproductive Health?
The COVID-19 pandemic interrupted delivery of routine sexual and reproductive health (SRH) care for adolescents and young adults (AYA), but less is known about what types of AYA experienced more pronounced declines. We used nationally representative data to compare changes in AYA and provide discussions about SRH between 2018 and 2022 among heterosexual and sexual minority (SM) youth. Rates of SRH discussions between provider and patient occurring during AYA health care visits showed room for improvement in 2018, but these numbers dropped even further when surveyed in 2022, especially in sexual minority (SM) patients. (Sou...

105. “There's Preconceived Notions about What I'm Experiencing”: Experiences of Racial and Gender Discrimination in Sexual Healthcare Settings Among Transgender and Nonbinary Young Adults of Color
Transgender and nonbinary Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC) face significant inequities in accessing sexual healthcare. The sexual healthcare experiences of BIPOC transgender and nonbinary young adults (YA), however, have received less attention and therefore remain poorly understood. Guided by intersectionality theory, this qualitative study explored how BIPOC transgender and nonbinary YA experience and resist racial and gender discrimination in sexual healthcare settings. 106. The Exposure to School Bullying and Cyberbullying and its Impacts Among Thai Transgender Female and Cis-Female Adolescents and Young Adults: A Comparative Cross-Sectional Survey Study in Thailand
This study aims primarily to compare the prevalence of school bullying and cyberbullying victimization between Thai transgender female youth and Thai Cis-female youth. Secondary purpose is to explore the impacts of experiencing bullying and cyberbullying on the happiness scale, academic performance, and alcohol drinking and smoking behavior among transgender female youth and their cis counterparts. This study sought to fill this gap by identifying protective factors for adaptive mental health during the pandemic among adolescents with no ACEs (ACE= 0), low/intermediate ACEs (ACE = 1-3), and high ACEs (ACE  ≥4). (Source: Journal of Adolescent Health)

108. Providing Context to Latino Youth Mental Health: Biocontextual Risk and Psychosocial Pathways of Adaptation Across the Transition to College
The transition to college presents opportunity and challenges for many Latino adolescents, who often navigate systemic, cultural, and individual level assets and demands (Gallo et al., 2009). Importantly, youth who enter college with exposure to multiple forms of victimization (i.e., polyvictimization) early in life as well as with biological vulnerabilities (i.e., hypocortisolism) may be at risk for poor mental health outcomes as they transition to adulthood (Finkelhor et al., 2011; Doane et al., 2018). 109. Pre-Pandemic Trends in Student Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors Using Cdc ’s Middle School Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 2015–2019
Longstanding and robust evidence highlights poor mental health outcomes and suicide-related behaviors among U.S. adolescents in the years leading up to and through the COVID-19 pandemic. Current data primarily focus on health outcomes among high school-aged adolescents and point to gaps in understanding mental health, suicidal thoughts and behaviors among younger adolescents. In order to understand the impact of COVID-19 on the mental health of pre-adolescents, data on their mental health prior to the COVID-19 pandemic is essential. (Source: Journal of Adolescent Health)

110. Move and Thrive: Development of a New Online Resource to Support Adolescent Physical Activity
Physical activity (PA) is a protective factor for adolescent health. However, many youth —including youth in larger bodies, transgender and gender diverse youth, and youth of color—experience discrimination and intimidation in traditional PA settings. At-home, online PA resources could decrease PA disparities and offer a safe way for adolescents to engage in PA; concerningly, though , extant online PA resources are teeming with developmentally inappropriate content for adolescents, including homogenous beauty ideals, encouragement to diet and use supplements, and failure to represent diverse adolescents. 111. Effectiveness of a Shelter-Based Health Empowerment Program for Pregnant And Parenting Youth Experiencing Homelessness: A Mixed-Methods Community-Based Participatory Research Study
Youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) face significant health challenges and have limited access to healthcare. Approximately one-third of YEH are pregnant or parenting, yet few interventions exist to meet the health needs of pregnant and parenting YEH (PPYEH) and their children. In partnership with a local housing program for PPYEH, this mixed-methods community-based participatory research study assessed the effectiveness of a multi-component shelter-based health empowerment program (EMPOWER) that sought to strengthen connections with health services for PPYEH and their children, improve child and adolescent health, and s...

112. Transcreating an Unintended Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program for Latino Teens Living in Rural Communities
Birth rates among immigrant Latino teens in rural U.S. are 2X than White teens; pregnancies are largely unintended. Adapting effective pregnancy prevention (TP) interventions to address specific contextual factors has been crucial to reducing unintended TP among Latino teens in rural non-Latino communities. Structural challenges and localized social norms regarding adolescent sexuality present challenges when tailoring curricula for culture and geography. Best practices for adapting evidence-based TP prevention programs in rural communities remain largely unknown. (Source: Journal of Adolescent Health)

113. Human Trafficking: Voices from the Field
Given their innate dependence on adults and developmentally appropriate impulsive and approval-seeking behaviors, youth are especially vulnerable to the tactics of human traffickers. Multiple studies demonstrated that trafficked persons routinely present to health care while being trafficked. Barriers to care for trafficked youth include misperceptions about labor and sex trafficking which limit identification of trafficked youth in health care settings. We sought to identify barriers to access to health care for exploited youth in San Diego County, as well as strategies for overcoming these barriers. (Source: Journal of Adolescent Health)

Systematic racism and oppression have contributed to the multifarious barriers encountered by Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) seeking contraceptive counseling and care. Obtaining contraceptive services may be especially difficult for young BIPOC, who may encounter additional challenges due to their age. (Source: Journal of Adolescent Health)

115. Patients' and Healthcare Workers' Opinions about Novel Injection-Molded Plastic Swabs for Vaginal Sample Collection
Supply chain bottlenecks accelerated nasopharyngeal swab innovation during the COVID-19 pandemic to value injection-molded medical-grade plastic swabs that match both the feel of traditional swabs and the capture and release of nucleic acid. These new designs may be transferable to sexually transmitted infection (STI) sample collection and have the potential to decrease manufacturing costs and improve sample collection. However, the appearance of the tips and shafts may be unacceptable, or cause injury, pain, or discomfort when used vaginally. (Source: Journal of Adolescent Health)
