Gumprecht shadows: when to use this terminology?
The expression Gumprecht shadows historically refers to lymphocyte lysates commonly observed in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). A literature review revealed that this term is restricted to CLL cases, and should not be applied to lymphocytosis-related conditions. Inappropriate use of this term can cause great anxiety in individuals receiving their blood count results, as well as in their families. In a web search engine commonly used to clear doubts on medical terms, there are countless pages where Gumprecht shadows are associated with CLL.A locução sombras de Gumprecht refere-se, historicame...

Comparison between two methods of ionized calcium measurement in newborns
Changes in ionized calcium (iCa) concentration seem to occur in newborns when the calcium supply from the mother is disconnected at birth, and a related hypocalcemia is produced. Thus, measurement of iCa is of particular importance in newborns. The aim of this study was to compare two methods of iCa measurement. We collected 50 samples from newborns in which we obtained values of iCa using both the direct and the indirect measurement. There is a significant correlation between iCa values obtained from Omni C and those obtained from the calculated method. As alterações na concentração de cá...

RAGE receptor and its soluble isoforms in diabetes mellitus complications
Chronic hyperglycemia, which is present in all types of diabetes, increases the formation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). The interaction of AGEs with receptor of advanced glycation end-products (RAGE) initiates a cascade of pro-inflammatory and pro-coagulant processes that result in oxidative stress, stimulating the formation and accumulation of more AGE molecules. This cyclic process, denominated metabolic memory, may explain the persistency of diabetic vascular complications in patients with satisfactory glycemic control. The RAGE found in several cell membranes is also present in soluble isoforms (esRAGE and...

CONCLUSION: Dysplastic epithelium occupies larger areas. Nuclear diameter is similar in dysplastic and transition epithelia. However, the latter has uniform nuclei, in contrast with pleomorphism in dysplastic epithelium.
