Acute promyelocytic leukemia: evaluation of diagnostic tests from 2000 to 2018 in a public hospital
Conclusion: Genetic confirmation was observed in 76.1% of samples, 60.2% by conventional cytogenetics and 15.9% by molecular biology. There was a disagreement between the methodologies, and a low sensibility of the conventional cytogenetics, demonstrating the imp ortance of performing molecular techniques for diagnostic confirmation.RESUMEN Introducci ón: La leucemia promielocítica aguda (LPA) es causada por la translocación t(15;17)(q24;q21), cuyo producto es la oncoproteína de fusión PML-RARa (proteína de la leucemia promielocítica-receptor alfa de ácido retinoico). La morfología de los promielocitos leucémi...

Influence of interleukins on prognosis of patients with oral squamous cells carcinoma
ABSTRACT Squamous cell carcinoma is a malignant neoplasm that affects the structures and tissues of the oral cavity. Interleukins (IL) synthesized from a tumor modulate a cascade reaction that may influence the prognosis of the disease. We aim to investigate in the literature whether interleukins are mediators that negatively or positively influence the prognosis of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma. A systematic review study was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes (PRISMA) instructions. PubMed (including MedLine), Scopus, Web of Science, SciELO and Latin A...

Ameloblastic carcinoma arising from a preexistent ameloblastoma
ABSTRACT Ameloblastic carcinoma (AC) is a rare odontogenic tumor that represents the malignant counterpart of an ameloblastoma. There are few cases of AC in the English-language literature, with only 16 cases arising from preexisting ameloblastomas reported in the last 10 years. Multiple local recurrences of ameloblastomas precede this transformation. In the current report, we describe a case of AC at the posterior maxilla in a 42-year-old female submitted to surgical resection, with three recurrences of ameloblastoma in a period of four years. Imaging exams showed a radiodense mass with cortical bone disruption and maxill...

Surgical excision was the treatment of choice.

Dermatoscopy in polypoid basal-cell carcinoma: a rare histopathological variation
We report a clinical case of BCC, with a bibliographical review, highlighting the clinical similarity of such malignant tumor with other benign and malignant tumors of the skin, besides the importance of dermoscopy for the diagnostic aid.RESUMEN El carcinoma basocelular (CBC) polipoide es un tumor raro, considerado como una variante cl ínica e histopatológica del CBC nodular. Destac...

Update of dental and maxillofacial alterations in patients with pycnodysostosis
ABSTRACT Pycnodysostosis is a rare, autosomal recessive genetic condition, which causes a decrease in bone remodeling, resulting in different clinical and radiographic manifestations. This case series aims to describe two clinical cases diagnosed at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Traumatology of a University on the Northeast of Brazil. There are two complex cases involving osteomyelitis and dental and bone alterations of the jaws. It is concluded that the knowledge of oral and maxillofacial characteristics of this syndrome are required to plan appropriate treatment for patient in order to avoid compli...

Gingival carcinoma cuniculatum mimicking a reactive/inflammatory process
ABSTRACT Carcinoma cuniculatum (CC), a rare variant of oral squamous cell carcinoma, presents well-differentiated neoplastic epithelial cells infiltrating the underlying submucosal or bone tissues, forming the so-called "rabbit burrows" filled with keratin. A 67-year-old female patient was referred complaining of a painless tumoral mass in the left mandibular body, with several months of evolution. Previous history indicated extraction of the teeth #37 and #38 and diagnosis of chronic suppurative osteomyelitis. A deep incisional biopsy revealed CC. Due to its microscopic features, suggesting an inflammatory or reactive pro...

Adenoid cystic carcinoma: immunohistochemistry and differential diagnosis, a case report
ABSTRACT A 52-year-old male patient complained of loss of sensitivity and pain in the maxilla. After examination, root canal treatment of tooth 12 was requested. Subsequently, there was a purplish increased volume of softened consistency in the area of vestibular attached gingiva of tooth 12. The anterior upper dental segment presented mobility. Incisional biopsy revealed malignant neoplasm of glandular epithelial origin, suggestive of solid adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC). An immunohistochemical panel was performed, which confirmed the histopathological suspicion. Solid ACC may lead to diagnostic difficulties, since this l...

FIPLIQ: an alternative solution for gynecological and oral cytology
Conclusion: Preliminary results suggest that FIPLIQ is suitable for the preparation and preservation of cytology specimens for up to 15 days.RESUMEN Introducci ón: La citología en medio líquido fue desarrollada para mejorar la prueba de Papanicolaou.

Histological evolution of fibrosis in patients with biliary atresia
Conclusion: Most infants with BA have liver fibrosis at diagnosis and it progresses rapidly.
