RDW as differential parameter between microcytic anemias in "pure" and concomitant forms
The objective of this study was to investigate the discriminatory power of red cell distribution width (RDW) between iron deficiency anemia and thalassemia minor. Method: Blood parameters were compared in 227 patients with iron deficiency anemia and/or thalassemia minor after diagnosis confirmed by molecular biology and HbA2 measurement for alpha thalassemia and beta thalassemia trait respectively. The frequency of alpha thalassemia trait in a population from two public hospitals of Minas Gerais was also determined. Result and conclusion: RDW was able to differentiate iron deficiency anemia from thalassemia trait, what ind...

Level of reactivity of IgM anticardiolipin antibodies in preeclampsia: a likely early serologic marker
The purpose of this study was to measure the level of anticardiolipin antibodies in preeclamptic pregnant women to verify a possible association between the presence of these antibodies and the development of the syndrome. A total of 36 pregnant women with preeclampsia and 19 women with normal pregnancy were evaluated. Anticardiolipin antibodies were determined by enzyme immunoassay. The reactivity level of anticardiolipin antibodies was significantly higher in the preeclamptic group, with a significance level of 95%. The results can mean the participation of anticardiolipin antibodies in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia. ...

Absence of Wharton's jelly: case report
There are few reports in the literature of the absence of Wharton's Jelly. Here we report the seventh case in a primigravida, 22 years old, admitted after vaginal delivery of stillborn. The umbilical cord have a long segment with disruption of cord structures and the three blood vessels were completely separated from each other, with a minimum amount of Wharton's jelly remaining around each vessel. The absence of Wharton' jelly is associated with fetal distress, intrauterine growth restriction, and fetal death. Quantitative/qualitative studies of Wharton's jelly represent an open field of research for possible correlations...

Influence of external factors on the preservation of human nervous tissue for histological studies: review article
Neuropathological studies are crucial for the new knowledge on pathophysiology and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. The postmortem brain tissue processing method directly impacts on both the appropriate integrity and the biomolecules detection by different histological and molecular biology techniques. In this review we will discuss topics on the influence of some external factors on the preservation of the brain tissue for histological studies (histochemistry and immunohistochemistry), such as factors either prior or after the death, and the chosen method for th...
