Report of two cases of vacuolar interface dermatitis initially suspected as melanoma in situ and review of the literature
We report two cases initially simulating melanoma in situ, reviewing the histopathological and immunohistochemical findings and the cases published in the literature with similar findings/results. We emphasize the importance of clinicopathological correlation in the evaluation of lesions with interface changes and in the "pseudomelanocytic nests", which may simulate melanoma in situ. We also highlight the importance of using a immunohistochemistry panel in addition to Melan-A, in the study of these lesions.RESUMO O diagnóstico de lesões melanocíticas pode ser desafiador, e o estudo imuno-hist...

Frequency of the morphological criteria of prostate adenocarcinoma in 387 consecutive prostate needle biopsies: emphasis on the location and number of nucleoli
Conclusion: The location and number of nucleoli may be valuable morphological markers to identify suspicious lesions, since these features are more specific for malignancy than nucleolar prominence. The presence of prominent nucleoli commonly leads to the initial diagnosis of suspicious lesion that, subsequently, will be resulted in benignity confirmed by immunohistochemistry.RESUMO Introdução e objetivos: Avaliamos a sensibilidade e a especificidade de critérios morfológicos para diagnóstico de adenocarcinoma da próstata em biópsias de agulha da próstata, consecutiva...

Procedures to minimize interference of hypertriglyceridemia in laboratory exams of lipemic samples in acute pancreatitis: a case report
ABSTRACT Lipemia can be characterized by serum turbidity caused by accumulation of lipoproteins and is a major cause of interference in laboratory analyzes. Hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) is the third most common cause of acute pancreatitis (AP). Diagnosis and laboratory monitoring of AP associated with HTG are hampered by the intense lipemia associated. This case report proposes an approach to laboratory interference caused by HTG in patient diagnosed with AP and actions target at achieving reliable laboratory tests, free from interference and useful in clinical decision making.RESUMO A lipemia pode caracterizar-se por turva&...

The critical value concept in clinical laboratory
ABSTRACT The critical value is a laboratory result representing a pathophysiological state that offers risk to a patient's life. The communication of these results is a laboratory responsibility and, according to the literature, 95% of physicians consider it useful in decision-making and patient management. Two-thirds of critical results lead to some change in therapeutic approach. The communication of critical results is a requirement for laboratory accreditation programs. Thus laboratories should establish a list of tests, their critical values, and the procedure describing the communication flow. The performance indicat...
