Giant epignathus of the palate: a case report
ABSTRACTEpignathi are congenital malformations, with a high level of mortality due to their obstructive mechanism and respiratory involvement. Most of them are benign; however, cases of malignant epignathus have been described. The possibilities of malignancy increase in the presence of neuroepithelium, an important confounding factor. Epignathus is described in a newborn, besides its clinical and histopathological study. Surgery with complete resection is the definitive treatment. Residual tissue is linked to recurrence, curiously without increasing the risk of malignancy.RESUMOEpignathus é um tipo de malforma&cced...

Pierre Robin sequence: case report, the relevance of autopsy
We reported an autopsy case of a child whose malformations of the oropharynx were identified only at birth. The child was extremely preterm with severe neonatal depression and poor recovery, and the orofacial alterations prevented the correct treatment. There was facial disorder characterized by micrognathia associated with cleft palate and posterior displacement of the tongue, compressing the vallecula, structurally compatible with glossoptosis. This autopsy surpassed the scientific and epidemiological relevance, allowing the family genetic counseling and close monitoring of a subsequent pregnancy.RESUMOSequência de...

Oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of metabolic syndrome: which mechanisms are involved?
ABSTRACTMetabolic syndrome (MS) is a combination of cardiometabolic risk factors, including obesity, hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia, dyslipidemia and hypertension. Several studies report that oxidative condition caused by overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) plays an important role in the development of MS. Our body has natural antioxidant system to reduce oxidative stress, which consists of numerous endogenous and exogenous components and antioxidants enzymes that are able to inactivate ROS. The main antioxidant defense enzymes that contribute to reduce oxidative stress are superoxide dismutase (SOD), cata...

Molecular biology techniques for loss of heterozygosity detection: the glioma example
ABSTRACT In recent years, many oncology institutions have implemented the use of molecular approaches to assess and manage cancer patients. One commonly observed type of genetic alteration in cancer is the loss of heterozygosity (LOH). In the clinical setting, this molecular genetic marker is an important tool for disease prognosis, diagnosis and treatment. For example, the loss of 1p/19q is a classical molecular marker for oligodendroglioma assessment. In addition, this marker is associated with a favorable prognosis and chemosensitivity in oligodendroglial tumors. Interpretation of the clinical significance of molecular ...

Inflammatory fibroid polyp (Vanek’s polyp): a case report and literature review
Inflammatory fibroid polyp (IFP) is a benign uncommon lesion (1%-4% of gastric benign lesions), originated from the submucosa of the gastrointestinal tract. Its origin is controversial and immunohistochemical studies of lesions have largely refuted the possible vascular, neural or smooth muscle origin. Recent studies suggest a neoplastic etiology due to a mutation, in some cases, in the alpha-type platelet-derived growth factor receptor gene (PDGFRa). Our objective is to report the case of a patient aged 70 years, with gastric IFP, comparing her immunohistochemical profile with those of other studies, and a brief review of...
