Experimental validation of a rapid staining method and digital cytology for cervical and anal cancer
ABSTRACT Cytology is used as detection and screening method of malignant and pre-malignant lesions showing their potential since the original works of Papanicolaou. The cytological smears are usually stained with the Pap staining, although this method is time consuming and requires different reagents. The aim of this study is to assess the quality of an original Blue staining in exfoliative smears comparing it with the standard Papanicolaou staining. The new Blue staining allows staining gynecological cytology with high quality standards at reduced cost and time when compared to the Papanicolaou method.RESUMO A citologia Ã...

Interference of cold agglutinin autoantibodies in erythrogram interpretation: a case report and literature review
ABSTRACT The erythrogram is one of the components of the blood count that includes red blood cell (RBC) quantification and evaluation. A correct interpretation and validation of the results obtained in an erythrogram require experience and critical awareness of health professionals. It is imperative to evaluate the interference of physiological variables, collection procedures, manipulation of samples and endogenous variables (such as the presence of cold agglutinin autoantibodies), since these may falsify the results obtained. Cold agglutinin autoantibodies are predominantly immunoglobulin type M (IgM), which cause agglut...

Serological and molecular evaluation of parvovirus B19 (B19V) in blood donors from the Blood Center of Brasília, Brazil: focus on women of childbearing age
Nossos resultados demonstraram...

Assessment of the pre-analytical phase of a clinical analyses laboratory
Conclusion: The evaluation of the QI allowed organizing the improvements that should be prioritized in the laboratory. The Sigma metric was useful for assessing the QIs considered important to the laboratory, for which there are no published specifications. The questionnaire for evaluating the laboratory's service and client's satisfaction was not a reliable tool for assessing the quality of the pre-analytical phase.RESUMO Introdu ção: A fase pré-analítica abrange os procedimentos antes da execução dos testes laboratoriais, sendo eles a requisição, o cadastro de clientes e exames, a coleta e o transporte de amostr...

Alkaline phosphatase: reference interval transference from CALIPER to a pediatric Brazilian population
Conclusion: The results demonstrated that the ALP RI for Brazilian children and adolescents are comparable to the CALIPER study in 92.4% of the patients and can be used for this population.RESUMO Introdu ção: A interpretação de exames laboratoriais necessita de intervalos de referência (IR) que podem variar entre diferentes populações.

Review of peripheral blood smear slides: assessment of the compliance with criteria used by analysts in a laboratory of a public hospital in Bahia, Brazil
Conclusion: The study evidenced the need of standardization of the criteria for hematoscopy used by analysts to obtain reproducible results that reflect quality and reliability by the prescribing physician. T herefore, it is necessary to invest in training the professionals involved in revision of blood smear slides.RESUMO Introdu ção: Recomendações em literatura e publicações de sociedades científicas têm proposto sistemas e níveis de classificação para comunicar alterações hematoscópicas no hemograma. Visando a uniformização dos resultados liberados no laboratório clínico, a padronização em hematosco...

Oxidative, inflammatory and cardiometabolic biomarkers of clinical relevance in patients with metabolic syndrome
Conclusion: The combination of IL-6, ultra-sensitive C-reactive protein (us-CRP), ADA, DPP-IV and the increase of TBARS, with the reduction of vitamin C, SH groups and adiponectin, promote inflammation and compromise insulin sensitivity, thus presenting an active role in the pathogenesis of MetS. These findings are significant because they may assist in monitoring clinical changes, in the prevention of future cardiometabolic events in individuals with MetS, and in the identification of inflammatory and oxidative markers that assist in the monitoring and prevention of MetS.RESUMO Introdu ção: A obesidade caracteriza-se p...

Evaluation of MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry (VITEK-MS) compared to the ANC card (VITEK 2) for the identification of clinically significant anaerobes
Conclusion: Both methodologies showed an ex cellent performance for the identification of the strains tested with great differences in relation to cost-benefit. MALDI-TOF MS allowed 35 additional identifications and a saving of BRL$ 7,786 with the release of culture positive result five days ahead of the ANC (VITEK 2). TAT reduction may contr ibute to a successful clinical resolution.RESUMO Introdu ção: A identificação das bactérias anaeróbias por métodos convencionais empregados nos laboratórios clínicos demanda muito trabalho e um longo tempo de resposta (TAT). Palisaded encapsulated neuroma clinically mimicking a mucocele: report of a case
We report the case of a 21-year-old female patient with the chief complaint of a small tumor on the lower left lip. Intraoral examination revealed a two-month evolution nodular lesion on the left labial mucosa, of resilient consistency and asymptomatic. A history of prior trauma was reported by the patient. A provisional diagnosis of mucocele was established, and an excisional biopsy was performed. The diagnosis was palisaded encapsulated neuroma (PEN). As PEN is considered underdiagnosed by many authors, a discussion on the morphologic diagnostic criteria of this lesion will be provided.RESUMO Relatamos o caso de uma paci...

The importance of homocysteine levels in the prognosis of patients with chronic renal disease and in hemodialysis patients
Conclusion: Hcy could be an important biomarker of renal disease progression mainly in hemodialysis patients. We emphasize the importance of normalizing plasma levels of this amino acid to ensure a better prognosis in kidney disease.RESUMO Introdu ção: A homocisteína (Hcy) é um dos metabólitos da metionina (Met), um aminoácido essencial proveniente da dieta.
