Association between human papillomavirus (HPV) and the oral squamous cell carcinoma: a systematic review
The human papillomavirus (HPV) is an epitheliotropic agent whose high-risk genotypes have a well-established link with the development of cervical cancer. Although the relation of HPV to the oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) has been studied since the beginning of the 1980s, its role in the oral carcinogenesis and the probable underlying molecular mechanisms are still not fully elucidated. We performed a systematic review of the worldwide scientific literature, published until the preparation of the present paper, concerning the association of HPV with OSCC, scrutinizing the samples, prevalence levels, the techniques uti...

Clinical and histopathological evidence of oral squamous cell carcinoma in young patients: systematized review
The oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) very often affects subjects above the sixth decade of life. However an increasing incidence has been observed in younger individuals, below 40 years. We conducted a systematized review of the current clinical, histopathological and therapeutic aspects of OSCC in young patients. Our work included studies that addressed OSCC involving young patients in the period 2007 2012, and which were indexed in PubMed. Initially, 499 articles were obtained; after refinement, 340 articles had their titles and abstracts evaluated, with 17 included in the sample. The majority of studies reported male...

Thalidomide promotes leukocytosis in mice inoculated with 4T1 mammary carcinoma
The aim of this study was to evaluate the therapy effect of thalidomide in the 4T1 murine mammary carcinoma. 4T1 cell suspension was injected into the posterior left flank of all animals to obtain solid tumors. Five days after inoculation, the treatment group was orally administered 150 mg/kg of thalidomide for seven days. Tumors were measured every 48 hours until the end of treatment. Whole blood was collected for hematology analysis. Our results suggest that thalidomide therapy increase the number of circulating leukocytes in the 4T1 murine mammary carcinoma, and this response is accompanied by a decrease in tumor growth...

Renal tumors: evaluation of prognostic factors in 98 cases from a reference hospital in Porto Alegre, Brazil
Introduction: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is an aggressive disease worldwide. Objective: Study traditional prognostic factors associated with pathological reports and the novel markers survivin and B7-H1 by immunohistochemistry. Methods: In a reference hospital of Porto Alegre, Brazil, we conducted a cross-sectional study of RCC in patients who underwent radical nephrectomy between 2006 and 2009. We selected those who were diagnosed with the most common histologic subtypes: clear cell and papillary RCC. We retrospectively reviewed pathological data to determine traditional prognostic factors, like size, presence of coagul...

The aim of this article is to report the case of a 23-year-old female patient that sought dental service for examination of an asymptomatic slow-growing large lump in the mandibular gingiva causing displacement of the right first molar. Excisional biopsy, histopathological analysis, Alcian blue/periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining and immunohistochemistry analysis for S-100 were performed. The diagnosis established was oral focal mucinosis. After three years, the patient is still under follow-up, without any recurrences. Ganglioglial differentiation in a medulloblastoma with extensive nodularity
We report the case of a 2 month-old patient with a large, probably congenital, posterior fossa tumor. Hematoxylin and eosin staining (HE), reticulin and immunohistochemistry revealed a medulloblastoma with extensive nodularity, showing ganglioglial differentiation, high proliferative index in the primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) area and low proliferative index in the ganglioglial maturation area. Ganglioglial differentiation is a rare event in medulloblastomas and its mechanism is still unknown. Oral angioleiomyoma: a case report and considerations on differential diagnosis
We report a case of an angioleiomyoma occurring in the maxillary gingiva. The lesion was painless, with a lobulated surface, fibrous in consistency, and firm upon palpation. Microscopic examination showed an encapsulated tumor mass composed of large vascular channels of varying calibers, surrounded by thick walls of irregularly arranged, spindle-shaped cells, which were immunopositive for smooth-muscle actin. It is sometimes difficult to differentiate an angioleiomyoma from other spindle-cell tumors, thus we emphasize its histological differential diagnosis.Angioleiomiomas são tumores mesenquimais benignos derivados...

This study aimed at making the differential diagnosis of joint disease in a case of genetic chimerism in a female multiparous donor from the Regional Blood Bank of Guarapuava-PR (Hemocentro Regional de Guarapuava-PR), who had had three pregnancies of male fetuses. The patient showed joint pain prior to the last donation. It was possible to identify fetal cells remaining in circulation 20 years after her last pregnancy.
