Effects of glyphosate herbicide ingestion on kidney function in rats on a balanced diet
CONCLUSION: This study showed changes in the kidney of rats exposed to a balanced diet with glyphosate, suggesting a potential risk to human kidney. Presumably, ultra-processed food that contain glyphosate can potentiate this risk. The relevance of these results lies in drawing attention to the need to regulate glyphosate concentration in ultra-processed foods in the future.PMID:38039493 | DOI:10.1590/2175-8239-JBN-2023-0043en (Source: Jornal Brasileiro de Nefrologia)

Trimethylamine N-oxide and kidney diseases: what do we know?
J Bras Nefrol. 2023 Dec 1:S0101-28002023005046502. doi: 10.1590/2175-8239-JBN-2023-0065en. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn the human gut, there is a metabolically active microbiome whose metabolic products reach various organs and are used in the physiological activities of the body. When dysbiosis of intestinal microbial homeostasis occurs, pathogenic metabolites may increase and one of them is trimethyl amine-N-oxide (TMAO). TMAO is thought to have a role in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, atherosclerotic heart diseases, and cerebrovascular events. TMAO level is also associated with ren...

Case fatality rate among COVID-19 patients treated with acute kidney replacement therapy
CONCLUSION: AKRT in hospitalized COVID-19 patients resulted in a CFR of 93%. Patients treated with AKRT were typically older, critically ill, and most died within 10 days of diagnosis. Better strategies to address this issue are urgently needed.PMID:37955522 | DOI:10.1590/2175-8239-JBN-2022-0161en (Source: Jornal Brasileiro de Nefrologia)

Progression of valve heart disease in a cohort of patients undergoing renal replacement therapy
CONCLUSION: CKD patients on renal replacement therapy exhibit a high frequency of valve disease, particularly mitral and aortic valve disease. However, no link was established between dialysis duration and valve disease occurrence or progression.PMID:37955523 | DOI:10.1590/2175-8239-JBN-2023-0036en (Source: Jornal Brasileiro de Nefrologia)
