Foreword —Engaging in Multisectoral Approaches Towards Achieving UHC
I am delighted to introduce this University of Tokyo lecture series on ‘Is UHC for cancer in Asia an achievable goal?’, supported by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) Asia Regional Office (UICC-ARO). Globally, the cancer burden continues to grow where recent data released by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) reports that in 2020 , there were an estimated 19.3 million new cases and 10 million deaths. A further increase in the cancer burden is predicted between 2020 and 2040, of which IARC estimates that half is due to changing demographics alone. (IARC press release 292.https://www.i...

Extraordinary nature of lecture series on cancer studies at the University of Tokyo
When I was in charge of promotion of global education at the University of Tokyo between 2015 and 2017, I attended a lot of international conferences on higher education, where I heard the voices that interdisciplinary classes and courses are necessary at the graduate-level programs in order to cultivate students who can solve the complicated global issues, including pandemic, environmental protection, social inequality and so on. At the same time, however, I also heard the claims that developing and maintaining interdisciplinary classes and courses are extremely difficult no matter where these classes and courses are deve...

Surviving cancer in Asia: cross-boundary cancer studies, University of Tokyo
The international community faces a lot of challenges relating to cancer treatment and care. Even a simple glance at the status of medical care around the world makes it clear that economic disparities correlate directly to differences in medical care systems, which in turn generate medical disparities. Needless to say, these ever-increasing disparities in cancer care are an urgent challenge that the entire world needs to address decisively. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)
