Age-specific lip, oral cavity and pharynx cancer incidence rate in the world
In order to make a comparison of the age-specific lip, oral cavity and pharynx cancer incidence rate between Japan and other countries, we abstracted cancer incidence rate from the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents Vol. XI (CI5) (1). The International Agency for Research on Cancer provides the CI5 databases on the incidence of cancer recorded by cancer registries (regional and national) worldwide. We used cancer incidence rate in five countries in Asia (China, India, Japan, Republic of Korea and Thailand), three countries in America (the USA, Canada and Brazil), two countries in Oceania (Australia and New Zealand) and fo...

Cancer-related FGFR2 overexpression and gene amplification in Japanese patients with gastric cancer
ConclusionsAlthough FGFR2 overexpression and gene amplification were shown in Japanese patients with unresectable gastric cancer, these alterations did not impact the effects of cytotoxic agents as first line chemotherapy. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Systemic therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma: current status and future perspectives
AbstractSince sorafenib was established as the standard of care for patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma, various tyrosine kinase inhibitors, targeting vascular endothelial growth factor receptor and other molecular growth factors, have been developed. Lenvatinib demonstrated non-inferiority to sorafenib in terms of the overall survival, and it has also become confirmed as another standard of care for patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma. Recently, various immune checkpoint inhibitors have been investigated, either as monotherapy or in combination with another agent, and superiority of the combination...

Metastatic mucinous adenocarcinoma arising from chronic fistula-in-ano
An 89-year-old man with chronic fistula-in-ano (FIA) for over 30  years presented with a large, tender, gluteal mass with discharging perianal cutaneous openings (Fig. 1). A colonoscopy 2  years before in another hospital had not detected any suspicious mass. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

IMRT improves local control in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma compared with conventional radiotherapy: propensity score-matched analysis
ConclusionsOur results suggested that intensity-modulated radiotherapy is more effective than two-dimensional/three-dimensional radiotherapy in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma, especially in locoregional control. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Debulking surgery for malignant tumors: the current status, evidence and future perspectives
AbstractDebulking surgery, also called cytoreductive surgery, is a resection of the tumor as much as possible and an intended incomplete resection for unresectable malignant tumors. Since the most important principle in surgical oncology is complete R0 resection, debulking surgery goes against the basic principle and obscures the concept of operability. However, debulking surgery has been advocated for various types of advanced malignant tumors, including gynecological cancers, urological cancers, gastrointestinal cancers, breast cancers and other malignancies, with or without adjuvant therapy. Positive data from randomize...

Emerging technologies for cervical cancer screening
AbstractCervical cancer remains a concern worldwide, and cervical cancer screening plays an important role in reducing the burden of this disease. Although cytology is still the main strategy for cervical cancer screening, it has gradually changed to human papillomavirus testing. The specificity of human papillomavirus testing is lower than that of cytology, which leads to an increased rate of colposcopy after positive results. To decrease colposcopic examinations, an efficient triage method is needed for human papillomavirus screening. New biomarkers have been developed and evaluated for primary screening and triage of ab...

Sharing genetic test results of germline pathogenic variants of hereditary cancer with relatives: A single-center cross-sectional study
ConclusionsThe rate of test result sharing with first-degree relatives was comparable with those in Europe and the USA. Patients with germline pathogenic variants also tended to share their test results more with their children and siblings than with their parents. Informing their relatives of the results was suggestive of the motivation to influence their relatives ’ health outcome and contribute to the well-being of their children and siblings. Can regular follow-up imaging contribute to the determination of appropriate timing of surgery in patients with undiagnosed mucinous cystic neoplasm? A multicenter retrospective study
ConclusionsMCNs increased in size, and typical imaging findings appeared over time. For undiagnosed MCN, regular follow-up examination contributed to the determination of the appropriate surgical timing. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

A randomized phase III study comparing trastuzumab emtansine with trastuzumab, pertuzumab and docetaxel in elderly patients with advanced stage HER2-positive breast cancer: Japan Clinical Oncology Group Study (JCOG1607, HERB TEA study)
AbstractThe standard first-line treatment for patients with human epidermal growth factor 2-positive metastatic breast cancer is a combination therapy of trastuzumab, pertuzumab and docetaxel, and the standard second-line treatment is trastuzumab emtansine. However, it may be difficult for the elderly to maintain sufficient intensity of treatment due to severe adverse events of trastuzumab, pertuzumab and docetaxel. The aim of this trial is to confirm the non-inferiority of trastuzumab emtansine over trastuzumab, pertuzumab and docetaxel in terms of overall survival in elderly (65-year-old or more) patients with human epid...

Limited resection for early-stage thymoma: minimally invasive resection does not mean limited resection
This report summarizes the differences among these three procedures with a review of studies (January 2000 to December 2020) focusing on the difference in surgical and oncological outcomes and presents current issues in the surgical management of thymoma. In this report, 16 studies were identified; 5 compared standard resection to limited resection, 9 compared standard resection to minimally invasive resection and 2 compared limited resection to minimally invasive resection. Most studies reported that the surgical and oncological outcomes of limited resection or minimally invasive resection were similar to those of standar...

Erratum to: Impact of previous thoracic radiation therapy on the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors in advanced non-small-cell lung cancer
In the originally published version of this manuscript, there were errors in the title. The title should be ``Impact of previous thoracic radiation therapy on the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors in advanced non-small-cell lung cancer'' instead of ``Impact of previous thoracsic radiation therapy on the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors in advanced non-smasll-cell lung cancer''. These errors have now been corrected online. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)
