Age-specific colorectal cancer incidence rate in the world
In order to make a comparison of the age-specific colorectal cancer incidence rate between Japan and other countries, we abstracted cancer incidence rate from the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents Vol. XI (CI5) (1). The International Agency for Research on Cancer provides the CI5 databases on the incidence of cancer recorded by cancer registries (regional and national) worldwide. We used cancer incidence rate in five countries in Asia (China, India, Japan, Republic of Korea, and Thailand), three countries in America (the United States of America, Canada and Brazil), two countries in Oceania (Australia and New Zealand) an...

Brief collaborative care intervention to reduce perceived unmet needs in highly distressed breast cancer patients: randomized controlled trial
ConclusionNewly developed brief collaborative care intervention program was found to be feasible and acceptable. The trial, however, failed to show the effectiveness of the program on patients ’ relevant subjective outcomes. Further intervention program having both brevity and sufficient intensity should be developed in future studies. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Clinical features and prognosis of clinical N0 non-small cell lung cancer exceeding 30  mm
ConclusionPure solid tumours comprised a large proportion of non-small cell lung cancer tumours>30  mm in size and their prognosis was poor. The presence of ground glass opacity and their relative proportion affect prognosis in patients with clinical N0 non-small cell lung cancer tumours>30  mm in size, similar to those with small-sized tumours. Significance of prophylactic urethrectomy at the time of radical cystectomy for bladder cancer
ConclusionsProphylactic urethrectomy at the time of radical cystectomy may have a survival benefit in patients with multiple tumours and/or concomitant carcinomain situ, particularly those who do not receive neoadjuvant chemotherapy. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Survival in patients with glioblastoma at a first progression does not correlate with isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH)1 gene mutation status
ConclusionsThese results suggest thatIDH1 mutation may not be a prognostic factor for survival at the first progression of patients with ‘primary’ glioblastoma and pretreated ‘secondary’ glioblastoma, and further warrant investigation in prospective studies. Cancer Care Evaluation Scale (CCES): measuring the quality of the structure and process of cancer care from the perspective of patients with cancer
ConclusionThe validity and reliability of the Cancer Care Evaluation Scale were confirmed, suggesting that this tool is useful for evaluating the quality of cancer care from the perspective of patients with cancer. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Degarelix as a neoadjuvant hormonal therapy for acute urinary tract toxicity associated with external beam radiotherapy for intermediate- and high-risk prostate cancer: a propensity score matched analysis
ConclusionsLuteinizing hormone-releasing hormon antagonists may reduce acute urinary tract toxicity during prostate cancer external beam radiotherapy compared with luteinizing hormone-releasing hormon agonists, in particular in patients with moderate to severe symptoms at the start of treatment. Latent prostate cancer among Japanese males: a bibliometric study of autopsy reports from 1980 –2016
AbstractProstate cancer is one of the most common malignancies, but a substantial portion remains latent throughout the patients ’ lifetime. Analysis of temporal change in the latent prostate cancer pool would be beneficial for clinical decision-making, but longitudinal autopsy studies are rare. We conducted a hand-search of the Annual of Pathological Autopsy Cases in Japan from 1980 to 2016 for cases of latent prostate can cer. Of 570 997 males aged 30 or older, latent prostate cancer was detected in 12 562 patients (2.2%). Proportion of detected cases correlated strongly with ‘aging rate’, the percentage of popul...

Immune checkpoint inhibitor efficacy and safety in older non-small cell lung cancer patients
ConclusionsIn this study, immune checkpoint inhibitors were effective and tolerable for patients aged ≥75 years. The modified G8 screening tool and performance status were associated with the outcome of older non-small cell lung cancer patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors. The current clinical use of adjuvant analgesics for refractory cancer pain in Japan: a nationwide cross-sectional survey
ConclusionsMany palliative care specialists select adjuvant analgesics depending on the pathophysiological mechanism of cancer pain in each case. They used such adjuvant analgesics in low doses for cancer pain with short first-response periods. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

The influence of coping types on post-traumatic growth in patients with primary breast cancer
ConclusionsThese results suggest that using proactive coping for conflicts caused by a breast cancer diagnosis and temporary avoidant coping for daily stresses during the treatment process may enhance post-traumatic growth while preventing deterioration in mental well-being. Additionally, seeking emotional support is important for post-traumatic growth. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Sentinel lymph node biopsy may be unnecessary for ductal carcinoma in situ of the breast that is small and diagnosed by preoperative biopsy
ConclusionsSize of ductal carcinomain situ lesions on preoperative diagnostic imaging is a predictor of diagnosis of invasive cancer on pathological examination of surgical specimens. Sentinel lymph node biopsy may be unnecessary in ductal carcinomain situ diagnosed by preoperative biopsy in patients with small lesions. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)
