The role of radiotherapy in the age of immunotherapy
AbstractWith the development of immune checkpoint inhibitors, the efficacy of immunotherapy as a cancer treatment that is effective against multiple tumor types has been established, and this modality came to be considered as the fourth pillar of cancer therapy. The clinical success of immunotherapy greatly changed the field of oncology by highlighting the importance of the immune system in cancer control and elimination. It has now become clear that research into, and the clinical application of, the immune response are important for effective cancer treatment. Moreover, it has become apparent that conventional cancer tre...

Sex- and age-related differences in the distribution of bladder cancer metastases
ConclusionsThe distribution of metastases in bladder cancer varies according to sex. Moreover, differences exist according to patient age and these differences are also sex-specific. In consequence, patient age and sex should be considered in the interpretation of imaging, especially when findings are indeterminate. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Impact of sarcopenia on post-operative outcomes following nephrectomy and tumor thrombectomy for renal cell carcinoma with inferior vena cava thrombus
ConclusionsIn conclusion, this study showed that sarcopenia was an independent prognostic factor for renal cell carcinoma with inferior vena cava thrombus after nephrectomy and tumor thrombectomy. Thus, sarcopenia evaluation can be utilized as an effective prognosticator of post-operative survival. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Malignant potential of colorectal neoplasms in Lynch syndrome: an analysis of 325 lesions endoscopically treated at a single institute
ConclusionsOur results suggest that the malignant transformation interval from low-grade adenomas to advanced neoplasms is similar in all parts of the colon. Furthermore, since one-third of neoplastic lesions with diameters of ≥5 and <10  mm and most of those ≥10 mm were advanced neoplasms, we recommend that in Lynch syndrome patients, careful colonoscopic surveillance should be performed throughout the colon, and all neoplastic lesions, regardless of the size, should be subjected to detailed endoscopic examination, complete res ection and detailed pathological examination. Death by suicide, other externally caused injuries and cardiovascular diseases within 6  months of cancer diagnosis (J-SUPPORT 1902)
ConclusionsThe first 6  months, and especially the first month, after cancer diagnosis were found to be a critical period for risks of death by suicide, other externally caused injuries and cardiovascular diseases. Our findings suggest that oncologists need to evaluate suicidal and cardiovascular risks of patients immedi ately after cancer diagnosis and provide preventive interventions. Clinical significance of comprehensive genomic profiling tests covered by public insurance in patients with advanced solid cancers in Hokkaido, Japan
ConclusionsThe publicly reimbursed cancer genomic profilings may lead to the modest but favorable therapeutic efficacy of genotype-matched therapy for solid cancer patients with no standard therapy. However, poor access to genotype-matched therapy needs to be resolved. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Age-specific bladder cancer incidence rate in the world
In order to make a comparison of the age-specific colorectal cancer incidence rate between Japan and other countries, we abstracted cancer incidence rate from the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents Vol. XI (CI5) (1). The International Agency for Research on Cancer provides the CI5 databases on the incidence of cancer recorded by cancer registries (regional and national) worldwide. We used cancer incidence rate in five countries in Asia (China, India, Japan, the Republic of Korea and Thailand), three countries in America (the United States of America, Canada and Brazil), two countries in Oceania (Australia and New Zealand)...

Influencing factors of end-of-dose failure in patients with cancer pain after oral oxycodone sustained-release tablets: a retrospective, case –control study
ConclusionsYounger patients are more likely to develop end-of-dose failure. Patients diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer, with pain in the head and neck and abdomen, and with liver metastases have a lower incidence of end-of-dose failure. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)
