Investigation of Population-Based Fall Risk in Eye Diseases
It is well-known that older adults are at higher risk of falls and resulting injuries. Falls and their aftermath are one of the major public health concerns in aging societies. The aging-related risk of falls and fractures can be attributed to factors such as deteriorating muscle strength, balance, and vision. One way to further break down the vision factor can be by age-related eye diseases such as cataract, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and glaucoma. Given their rapidly increasing prevalence, understanding the risk of falls by diagnosis of these eye diseases has clinical and societal importance. However, popula...

Emerging Role of Axial Length Trajectories in the Management of Myopia
Parents and those in the health care sector who work with children will be familiar with childhood growth curves for height and weight. These normative values have existed since the late 19th century and can help predict various disorders such as undernutrition, obesity, and growth-related or endocrine conditions. Normative values can guide diagnosis and allow for timely interventions. Given the association of increased axial length with myopia, is it feasible and worthwhile to add axial length trajectory to standard childhood reference data? (Source: JAMA Ophthalmology)

Silicone Oil From Syringes —a Potentially Overlooked Issue for Intravitreal Injections—Reply
In Reply We would like to thank Melo et al for their interest in our recent publication entitled “Multiple Small Floaters Associated with Silicone Oil Droplets Following Intravitreal Pegcetacoplan Injection.” We share their concerns regarding the occurrence of symptomatic silicone oil droplets (SODs) following intravitreal injections (IVIs) of various ocular medications. In our report, we h ypothesized that repeated up and down movements of the syringe plunger intended to eliminate gas bubbles, combined with pegcetacoplan’s high viscosity, contributed to the occurrence of intravitreal SODs. In a previous report, Melo...

Silicone Oil From Syringes —A Potentially Overlooked Issue for Intravitreal Injections
To the Editor The study conducted by Bijon et al addresses a potentially important and underestimated issue pertaining to intravitreal injections (IVIs). Given the substantial number of IVI procedures performed globally, even seemingly minor concerns might merit attention. For instance, the 2018 American Society of Retina Specialists Preferences and Trends survey revealed that 60% of US retina specialists had encountered at least 1 patient with silicone oil (SO) droplets following IVI of bevacizumab, 5% had resorted to vitrectomy to manage symptomatic floaters secondary to SO, and 2% had witnessed patients pursuing legal a...

Suggested Principles for Sex and Gender Data in Ophthalmology Clinical Trials
Xie et al assessed how sex or gender terminology were applied in ophthalmology clinical trials associated with US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) drug approvals. Sex is a biological construct that is based on physiology, anatomy, hormones, and genetics. Gender is a multidimensional construct encompassing both gender expression and identity. Xie and colleagues reported that sex and gender terms were applied incorrectly (using sex and gender interchangeably, sex-related terms in reference to gender, and gender-related terms in reference to sex) 80.5% of the time in 85 clinical trials. They also found that while 96.5% of c...
