Advances in Artificial Intelligence Chatbot Technology in Ophthalmology —Reply
In Reply We sincerely thank Lin and colleagues for their comments on our article. Using a free trial of OphthoQuestions, a popular question bank for ophthalmology board certification preparation, we found that ChatGPT-3.5 correctly answered 58 of 125 questions in January 2023 (46%) and 73 of 125 questions in February 2023 (58%). Lin and colleagues make the argument that since this time, the accuracy of ChatGPT has increased. We completely agree and note the findings of our recent investigation published in JAMA Ophthalmology. Here, we found that ChatGPT-4 correctly answered 105 of 125 questions of the same question bank in...

Epidemiology of Retinopathy of Prematurity in the US From 2003 to 2019 —Reply
In Reply We thank Drs Groth and Donahue for their insights on our recent publication. In their Letter to the Editor, they suggest that the rise in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) incidence may not be as substantial as the article concluded. While this proposition is possible, we do not believe that their presented hypotheses provide the best explanation for our study ’s findings. (Source: JAMA Ophthalmology)

Advances in Artificial Intelligence Chatbot Technology in Ophthalmology
To the Editor We read with interest the timely article by Mihalache and colleagues. Using the free GPT-3.5 version of ChatGPT released in November 2022, the authors show that this artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot correctly answered half of OphthoQuestions ’ practice questions. In this letter, we highlight the higher performance of the more recent GPT-4 version of ChatGPT (released in April 2023) compared with GPT-3.5, ophthalmologists, and ophthalmologists-in-training on practice material for the written examination of the American Board of Ophthal mology (ABO). Epidemiology of Retinopathy of Prematurity in the US From 2003 to 2019
To the Editor The recent article by Bhatnagar et al described a relatively constant incidence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) from 2003 until about 2006, followed by a relatively linear rise until 2012, followed again by a relatively constant incidence (Figure 1). This increase in ROP over time is surprising given the relative stability in factors that correlate with ROP; furthermore, this type of incidence curve does not appear to be physiologic. As the authors mention, there were neither associated changes in survival nor alterations in management. We propose other factors may in part be responsible for these observa...

Reducing the Risks of Nuclear War —The Role of Health Professionals
In January 2023, the Science and Security Board of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moved the hands of the Doomsday Clock forward to 90 seconds before midnight, reflecting the growing risk of nuclear war. In August 2022, the UN Secretary-General Ant ónio Guterres warned that the world is now in “a time of nuclear danger not seen since the height of the Cold War.” The danger has been underlined by growing tensions between many nuclear armed states. As editors of health and medical journals worldwide, we call on health professionals to alert the public and our leaders to this major danger to public health and the e...
