Eating Keto, Vegan Diets Rewired Immune System Within 2 Weeks
Switching to a ketogenic or vegan diet caused quick changes in people ’s immune systems, a small crossover study involving 20 people found. The results “may have the potential to improve our understanding of diet-based therapeutic options for the prevention and treatment of disease,” the researchers wrote in Nature Medicine. E-Cigarettes May Be Better Than Nicotine Gum for Quitting Smoking
People who used electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, to help them stop smoking were more likely to have quit combustible cigarettes at 6 months than those who used nicotine chewing gum, according to data from a randomized clinical trial. But the majority of the e-cigarettes group was still vaping at 6 months, while the groups using the 2 other smoking cessation methods —nicotine chewing gum and varenicline, a medication marketed as Chantix—were no longer using those tools. Health AI Assurance Laboratories —Reply
In Reply We agree with the comment by Drs Stead and Aliferis that “clinical-grade AI is no different than medications and devices where extensive preclinical research and development, with phase 1 and phase 2 trials, precede phase 3 and phase 4 trials.” Therefore, the Coalition for Health AI is providing a blueprint for how to adhere to rigorous AI method/tool development before an independent, external evaluation is conducted via an assurance laboratory. Health AI Assurance Laboratories
To the Editor Because a false security or expectation of assurance is as bad as or worse than no assurance, we feel obligated to question whether the approach toward trust-enabling health artificial intelligence (AI) discussed in the recent Special Communication with the proposed nationwide network of health AI assurance laboratories will be either feasible or scientifically valid. I Am Your Father
In this narrative medicine essay, a child psychiatrist is left with no choice but to sit with his 6-year-old son after all his child-behavior strategies failed to jolt the child out of his meltdown, sparked by a long line for a Star Wars ride at a Disney park. Self-Reported Demographics of JAMA Network Editors and Editorial Board Members
The editors of JAMA and the JAMA Network journals have affirmed a steadfast commitment to equity in the conduct of our work and the content that we publish. This commitment includes an intentional strategy to ensure that editorial decision-makers and board members that advise the editors represent the breadth of thought, expertise, experiences, and backgrounds important for the fields of medical science covered by our journals. The strategy also aims to include individuals from groups that have been historically marginalized and excluded from medicine and medical publishing. One aspect of this work is our commitment to rep...

Fever, Rash, and Shortness of Breath in a 69-Year-Old
A 69-year-old had fever, fatigue, rash, right periorbital swelling, and shortness of breath. Chest computed tomography revealed numerous small, bilateral pulmonary nodules; laboratory testing revealed mean corpuscular volume, 96.1 fL; hemoglobin level, 12.4 mg/dL; and leukopenia. Adjunctive Steroids as Stroke Reperfusion Strategy
With recent advances in endovascular devices and techniques for the treatment of large-vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke, rates of successful recanalization are as high as 90%. While technologies may continue to improve, it would be unreasonable to anticipate significant gains in this measure of macroperfusion. Instead, efforts are increasingly turned toward neuroprotection and augmenting the microcirculation to promote tissue viability during acute cerebral ischemia. Adjunctive intra-arterial thrombolysis and the recombinant variant of human activated protein C (3K3A-APC) have shown promising preliminary results, but warrant ...

Endovascular Thrombectomy for Large Ischemic Stroke
This exploratory analysis of the SELECT2 trial assesses the relationship between imaging estimates of irreversibly injured brain (core) and at-risk regions (mismatch) and the association of mismatch with clinical outcomes and endovascular treatment effect in adult patients with acute ischemic stroke due to occlusion of the internal carotid or middle cerebral artery and large ischemic core in 31 global centers between October 2019 and September 2022.
