Intra-cardiac Embolism of a Large Bone Cement Material after Percutaneous Vertebroplasty Removed through a Combination of an Endovascular Procedure and an Inferior Vena Cava Exploration: a Case Report.
Abstract Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) is a minimally invasive surgical treatment for patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF) and can rapidly alleviate pain, improve mobility, and stabilize the vertebrae. However, it has the potential to cause complications such as cement embolism. A 55-year-old female presented with pain in the lumbar region as a chief complaint. PVP was performed after diagnosis of acute OVCFs at L4 and L5. No abnormal symptoms were reported after surgery, but a large cement embolism was observed in her right atrium and ventricle. After discussion in a multi-discipli...

Consensus Statements by Korean Society of Interventional Neuroradiology and Korean Stroke Society: Hyperacute Endovascular Treatment Workflow to Reduce Door-to-Reperfusion Time.
Abstract Recent clinical trials demonstrated the clinical benefit of endovascular treatment (EVT) in patients with acute ischemic stroke due to large vessel occlusion. These trials confirmed that good outcome after EVT depends on the time interval from symptom onset to reperfusion and that in-hospital delay leads to poor clinical outcome. However, there has been no universally accepted in-hospital workflow and performance benchmark for rapid reperfusion. Additionally, wide variety in workflow for EVT is present between each stroke centers. In this consensus statement, Korean Society of Interventional Neuroradiolog...

Evaluation of a Commercial Immuno-Chromatographic Assay Kit for Rapid Detection of IgM Antibodies against Leptospira Antigen in Human Serum.
Abstract Leptospirosis is a febrile zoonotic disease. Routine diagnosis of leptospirosis is based on the detection of specific antibodies with serological tests. The aim of our study was to determine the usefulness of immunochromatographic assay (ICA), ImmuneMed Leptospira IgM Duo Rapid test kit from Korea, in rapid screening of acute leptospirosis in emergency cases with limited expertise. A total of 197 serum samples (93 positive, 104 negative) were selected randomly. The test has good diagnostic sensitivity 73% and specificity 90%. With positive predictive value of 87% and negative predictive value of 79%, this...

Two Cases of Chloromethylisothiazolinone and Methylisothiazolinone-associated Toxic Lung Injury.
Abstract Previous animal studies have not conclusively determined the association between exposure to humidifier disinfectants (HDs) containing 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (CMIT) and/or 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (MIT) and development of HD-associated lung injuries. Nonetheless, patients exposed to HDs containing only CMIT and/or MIT showed clinically similar lung injuries to those exposed to HDs containing polyhexamethylene guanidine (PHMG) or oligo (2-[2-ethoxy]ethoxyethyl) guanidinium chloride (PGH). Here, we report twin sisters with lung injuries associated with exposure to CMIT/MIT-containing HD...

Biochemical Predictors of Early Onset Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Young Children with Obesity.
Abstract BACKGROUND: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and their associated risk factors are not well-established in young children with obesity. METHODS: Anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, laboratory tests, and abdominal ultrasonography (USG) were performed in all subjects. Seroprevalence of Opsonophagocytic Antibodies against Serotype Ia, Ib, II, III, and V Group B Streptococcus among Korean Population.
CONCLUSION: During infancy, only a limited proportion of infants have functional immunity against serotype Ia, Ib, II, III, and V GBS. Primary Autosomal Recessive Distal Renal Tubular Acidosis Caused by a Common Homozygous SLC4A1 Mutation in Two Lao Families.
Abstract Primary distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA) caused by mutations of the SLC4A1 gene, which encodes for erythroid and kidney isoforms of anion exchanger, shows marked difference in inheritance patterns and clinical features in different parts of the world. While the disease shows autosomal dominant inheritance without any red cell morphological abnormalities in the temperate countries, it is almost invariably recessive, and often accompanies red cell morphological abnormalities or hemolytic anemia in the tropics, especially in Southeast Asia. Here, we report three patients with autosomal recessive (AR) dRT...

The Risk of Spontaneous Preterm Birth according to Maternal Pre-pregnancy Body Mass Index in Twin Gestations.
The objective of this study was to determine the risk of spontaneous PTB according to the pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) in twin gestations. METHODS: The association between the risk of PTB and pre-pregnancy BMI was determined in women pregnant with twins between 2004 and 2014. Pre-pregnancy BMI values were divided into three groups (underweight/normal/overweight and obese). PTB was classified as spontaneous PTB (following preterm premature rupture of membranes, preterm labor, or cervical insufficiency) or medically indicated PTB (cesarean section or induction of labor because of maternal/fetal indications). ...

The Emerging Method of Suicide by Electronic Cigarette Liquid: a Case Report.
Abstract Electronic cigarettes (ECs) are a device that aerosolize liquid nicotine by heating a solution of nicotine, glycerol and flavoring agents. The awareness and the usage of ECs has increased in many countries. Due to the online sales and the absence of EC regulations, the prevalence of EC usage is especially high in adolescents and young adults. Due to the large amount and the high nicotine concentration of EC liquid, the ingestion for suicide can lead to cardiac death. We had two patients, a 27-year-old male who ingested about 23 mg/kg of nicotine and a 17-year-old female who ingested about 30 mg/kg of nico...
