Seek and you shall find: Yersinia enterocolitica in Ireland ’s drinking water
DiscussionOur analysis of these three isolates deemed them to beYersinia species not known currently to be pathogenic, but determining this necessitated the use of next-generation sequencing and advanced bioinformatics. Our work highlights the importance of having this technology available to public laboratories, either locally or in a national reference laboratory. The introduction of molecular technologies for the detection ofYersinia species may increase the rate of detections. Accurate identification of significant pathogens in environmental, public health and clinical microbiology laboratories is critically important ...

Vitamin  B12 deficiency in diabetic patients treated with metformin: A narrative review
AbstractMetformin is the most prescribed oral hypoglycemic drug and is considered by many health practitioners as the first-line treatment for non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (T2DM). It is used either as a monotherapy or adjuvant to other anti-hyperglycemic agents. Most of its side effects are usually mild and self-limiting. However, several studies have shown an association between the use of metformin and low vitamin B12 levels in diabetic patients. The current review aimed to provide a literature review of the current published reports on the association, the possible mechanisms, and the related individualized r...

Trends in the surgical management of proximal humerus fractures in Ireland from 2009 to 2022: An increasing usage of reverse shoulder arthroplasty
ConclusionsThere has been an increasing volume of operatively managed proximal humeral fractures in Ireland, which sustained despite the 2015 publication of the highly publicised PROPHER trial. The increasing utilisation of total shoulder arthroplasty in acute trauma management is notable and necessitates appropriate training for trauma theatre personnel. Clinical and microbiologic effect of local application of curcumin as an adjunct to scaling and root planing in periodontitis: Systematic review
ConclusionThis review suggested that local application of curcumin can be considered as a viable adjunct to mechanical debridement in periodontitis. However, further studies need to be conducted to establish its optimum dose, delivery method, and frequency in achieving the best clinical outcomes. (Source: Irish Journal of Medical Science)

Investigation of MHR-nephropathy relationship and the effect of SGLT2is on MHR in patients with type 2 diabetes
ConclusionIn this study, results supporting the relationship between DN and MHR and the effect of SGLT2i drugs on MHR were found. The use of MHR value as a marker in clinical course monitoring and shaping the treatment according to these markers may be useful in terms of prediction and treatment of complications. Interstitial lung disease and associated factors in patients with Sj ögren’s syndrome
ConclusionsThe distribution of male patients compared to female patients was higher in patients with lung involvement than in patients without lung involvement. This may be related to older age, higher smoking rate, and longer nicotine consumption in men. Age, smoking, and severity of lung involvement are more important than inflammation status and autoantibodies for prognosis. (Source: Irish Journal of Medical Science)

A case –control study to evaluate irisin levels in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus
ConclusionWe demonstrated low irisin levels in type 1 diabetes mellitus and the association of the highest irisin amounts to an insulin therapy and a better glycaemic control. Furthermore, the measurement of irisin levels could be useful as laboratory markers to monitor type 1 diabetes mellitus severity and therapy response. (Source: Irish Journal of Medical Science)
