Renal toxicity caused by diethylene glycol: an overview
AbstractDiethylene glycol (DEG) is nephrotoxic, potentially resulting in high morbidity and mortality. Its main nephrotoxic by-product is diglycolic acid (DGA). This narrative overview summarizes selected literature with a focus on clinical findings, pathophysiology, diagnosis including morphological features of renal biopsies, and management. The kidney injury in DEG poisoning is secondary to proximal tubular necrosis caused by DGA. Marked vacuolization and edema of epithelial cells obstruct the lumen, reducing urine flow and, consequently, resulting in anuria and uremia. The clinical alterations due to DEG poisoning are ...

Neurocognitive effects of androgen deprivation therapy and new hormonal agents in a sample of patients with metastatic prostate cancer
ConclusionsTreatment of mPC with ADT is correlated with neurocognitive deficits in several cognitive domains. Language skills and processing speed were most frequently impaired. However, a consistent pattern of cognitive impairment was not identified. Neurocognitive deficits should be considered in phase III and IV trials.Trial registrationThe study was registered in the German Clinical Trials Registry (DRKS00017727). The role of toll-like receptors (TLRs) and their therapeutic applications in glomerulonephritis
AbstractOne of the most important features of innate immunity is the presence of a special group of pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) called toll-like receptors (TLRs), which recognize pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) and damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), resulting in a quick and effective immune response to them. Glomerulonephritis (GN) is one of the most important categories of renal disorders characterized by destructive responses of the immune system to the glomerulus. To date, the association of TLRs as important innate immune system members with GN has been one of the topics that attracte...

A cost-effective transperineal prostate biopsy method utilizes the original transrectal setting
ConclusionsTPB performed with convex –convex ultrasound probe and double free-hand technique is safe, feasible, cost-effective, and demonstrates equivalent CDR to TRB. Its use may eliminate infectious hospitalizations while minimizing the need for additional capital in the adoption of TPB. (Source: International Urology and Nephrology)

Factors affecting the levels of anxiety and depression among patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis
ConclusionsAnxiety and depression are under-diagnosed in patients with ESRD undergoing HD in Jordan. Screening and referral to psychological health specialists are needed. (Source: International Urology and Nephrology)

Predictive value of Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI) for the severity of vasculogenic erectile dysfunction
ConclusionOur results demonstrated that PNI score is significantly lower in patients with severe and moderate ED. It has been also revealed that the PNI score is an independent predictive factor for severe ED. (Source: International Urology and Nephrology)

Handgrip strength and all-cause mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies
ConclusionsIn patients with CKD, better HGS is associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality. This study supports using HGS as a strong predictor of mortality in this population. (Source: International Urology and Nephrology)

Alteration of the maximal renal water excretion capacity with kidney function and age in human
This study shows a decrease in maximal urinary dilution capacity and free water clearance with CKD and age, without gender difference. These alterations are mild but must be considered when a significant water intake is required or in the case of hyponatremia. (Source: International Urology and Nephrology)

Alpha-pinene neutralizes cisplatin-induced reproductive toxicity in male rats through activation of Nrf2 pathway
ConclusionResults suggest that AP can exhibit therapeutic effects against CP-induced testicular toxicity. It can be concluded that AP may be a potential molecule to abolish reproductive toxicity after chemotherapy. (Source: International Urology and Nephrology)

The clinical and imaging features of eosinophilic cystitis in children: a case series study
ConclusionThe clinical and imaging manifestations of EC in children have relative characteristics; when urologist and radiologist confronted with similar cases, EC should be considered. The final diagnosis depends on pathological biopsy. (Source: International Urology and Nephrology)

Comparison of the Charlson comorbidity index, the modified Charlson comorbidity index, and the recipient risk score in prediction of the graft and patient survival among renal graft recipients: historical cohort in a single center
ConclusionThe mCCI-KT index followed by the CCI index provided the best model in predicting the 10-year patient survival; however, they were poor in predicting graft survival and this model can be used for better stratifying transplant candidates prior to surgery.
