Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia and the Risk of Falls in Older Men: Insights From a Population-Based Study on Geriatric Morbid Conditions
CONCLUSION: The findings indicate that BPH contributes to the incidence of falls among older men, particularly those with comorbid conditions. Considering the heightened fall risk among elderly individuals suffering from multiple morbidities, particularly those with BPH, targeted interventions are essential for mitigating the risk of falls in this vulnerable group.PMID:38569619 | PMC:PMC10990761 | DOI:10.5213/inj.2448064.032 (Source: International Neurourology Journal)

Efficacy and Safety of Low-Dose Intravesical OnabotulinumtoxinA Injections in Female Patients With Detrusor Overactivity With Detrusor Underactivity
CONCLUSION: Low-dose intravesical onabotA for DODU demonstrated a relatively shorter duration of efficacy than OAB. Nonetheless, the treatment improved both storage and voiding symptoms in patients with DODU without significant adverse effects.PMID:38569620 | PMC:PMC10990756 | DOI:10.5213/inj.2346228.114 (Source: International Neurourology Journal)

Surgical Outcomes and Predictive Factors in Patients With Detrusor Underactivity Undergoing Bladder Outlet Obstruction Surgery
CONCLUSION: In men with DU accompanied by equivocal or significant BOO, surgical intervention to alleviate the obstruction may enhance the IPSS, quality of life, and UFM results. However, those with DU and an unobstructed bladder outlet face a comparatively high risk of treatment failure. Preoperative detrusor overactivity and urinary catheterization are associated with more favorable surgical outcomes. Consequently, active deobstructive surgery should be considered for patients with DU who are experiencing urinary retention.PMID:38569621 | PMC:PMC10990765 | DOI:10.5213/inj.2346252.126 (Source: International Neurourology Journal)

Water Vapor Therapy and Zonal Anatomy of the Prostate
Int Neurourol J. 2024 Mar;28(1):67-69. doi: 10.5213/inj.2346278.139. Epub 2024 Mar 31.ABSTRACTWater vapor therapy using Rezūm has been recently introduced as a minimally invasive surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia and is being increasingly performed. However, there is a lack of real-time images showing this practice and how convective water vapor acts in the prostate gland. In real-time ultrasonography, convective water vapor rapidly spreads throughout the ipsilateral transitional zone and is mostly limited within the transitional zone. For educational purposes, we would like to present a case to help readers unders...

The Ketone Bridge Between the Heart and the Bladder: How Fast Should We Go?
Int Neurourol J. 2024 Feb;28(Suppl 1):2-11. doi: 10.5213/inj.2346250.125. Epub 2024 Feb 29.ABSTRACTMetabolic syndrome (MS) is associated with both cardiovascular and bladder dysfunction. Insulin resistance (IR) and central obesity, in particular, are the main risk factors. In these patients, vicious pathological cycles exacerbate abnormal carbohydrate metabolism and sustain an inflammatory state, with serious implications for both the heart and bladder. Ketone bodies serve as an alternative energy source in this context. They are considered a "super-fuel" because they generate adenosine triphosphate with less oxygen consum...

Pathophysiology of Overactive Bladder and Pharmacologic Treatments Including β3-Adrenoceptor Agonists -Basic Research Perspectives
Int Neurourol J. 2024 Feb;28(Suppl 1):12-33. doi: 10.5213/inj.2448002.001. Epub 2024 Feb 29.ABSTRACTOveractive bladder (OAB) is a symptom-based syndrome defined by urinary urgency, frequency, and nocturia with or without urge incontinence. The causative pathology is diverse; including bladder outlet obstruction (BOO), bladder ischemia, aging, metabolic syndrome, psychological stress, affective disorder, urinary microbiome, localized and systemic inflammatory responses, etc. Several hypotheses have been suggested as mechanisms of OAB generation; among them, neurogenic, myogenic, and urothelial mechanisms are well-known hypo...

Quantification of Aging-Related Decreases in Sensory Innervation of the Bladder Trigone in Rats
CONCLUSION: The structural and functional integrity of the sensory web in the trigonum of rats is negatively affected by the aging process, potentially leading to impaired communication between the bladder urothelium the CNS. Consequently, these perturbations in the sensory system may contribute to the pathogenesis or exacerbation LUTS.PMID:38461855 | PMC:PMC10932575 | DOI:10.5213/inj.2346220.110 (Source: International Neurourology Journal)

Adreno-Muscarinic Synergy of Contractile Responses From Human Hyperplastic Prostate
CONCLUSION: These experiments show that adreno-muscarinic contractile synergy is a feature of human hyperplastic prostate tissue. This has implications for the use of a combination therapy of α-blockers and anti-muscarinic agent to relieve secondary symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia, at least in men who can tolerate antimuscarinics without a risk of retention.PMID:38461856 | PMC:PMC10932579 | DOI:10.5213/inj.2346144.122 (Source: International Neurourology Journal)

Application of the Sleep C.A.L.M. Tool for Assessing Nocturia in a Large Nationally Representative Cohort
CONCLUSION: Sleep C.A.L.M. burden is associated with increased odds of nocturia in a dose-dependent fashion, and potentially a relevant means by which to organize the underlying etiologies for nocturia among community-dwelling adults.PMID:38461857 | PMC:PMC10932577 | DOI:10.5213/inj.2346258.129 (Source: International Neurourology Journal)
