Epithelioid Hemangioma (Angiolymphoid Hyperplasia With Eosinophilia) of the Heart With Peripheral Eosinophilia and Nephrotic Syndrome
We present an unusual case of cardiac EH in a young woman with supraventricular arrhythmia, nephrotic syndrome (membranous glomerulopathy), and peripheral eosinophilia after a pregnancy and normal partum resembling Kimura disease. Echocardiogram showed a large tumor mass in the right cardiac ventricle. The cardiac tumor was removed and the histopathology revealed an endothelial proliferation associated with abundant eosinophils. The neoplastic endothelial cells were eosinophilic and polygonal with epithelioid/histiocytoid morphology. Lymphoid nodules were occasionally seen. The neoplastic cells were positive for CD34, CD31...

Molecular Testing in Multiple Synchronous Lung Adenocarcinomas: Case Report and Literature Review
We report a case with multiple synchronous primary pulmonary adenocarcinomas in a 72-year-old female with previous history of smoking. The patient presented with cough and bilateral lung ground glass opacities. A positron emission tomography/computed tomography scan showed no activity in mediastinal lymph nodes. She underwent a left upper lobe biopsy and a right upper lobe wedge resection. Pathology revealed 4 morphologically distinct adenocarcinoma foci, suggestive of synchronous primary lung tumors. Molecular testing demonstrated no mutation in the left tumor. Three different driver mutations were present in the right lu...

IMP3 Is Strongly Expressed in Malignant Phyllodes Tumors of the Breast: An Immunohistochemical Study
Conclusions. This is the first study evaluating the IMP3 immunohistochemical expression in PTs. Its expression correlates with histological grade and could be used in the differential diagnosis of fibroepithelial tumors and in predicting a more aggressive behavior. Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinomas of the Lower Extremities Show Distinct Clinical and Pathologic Features
Cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas mainly affect older, predominantly male patients. Most are due to chronic ultraviolet exposure, and associated with actinic keratoses. On the lower extremities, they occur more commonly in women. However, data on these tumors as a distinct group are scarce. We evaluated 61 squamous cell carcinomas of the lower extremities. Overall, 69% of patients were female. Mean age was 75 years. More than 90% of tumors were well differentiated, 3% showed perineural invasion, and none lymphovascular invasion. In all, 63.9% showed evidence of severe chronic sun damage. Associated actinic keratoses were ...

Thyroid Transcription Factor-1 Expression in Adenocarcinomas of the Bile Duct
Conclusions. To avoid potential pitfalls, TTF-1 should be interpreted in conjunction with the clinical setting, histology, and the results of markers such as CK7, CK20, Napsin A, and CDX2. This report is the first of TTF-1 positivity in adenocarcinomas from the extrahepatic biliary tract. (Source: International Journal of Surgical Pathology)

Lymphocytic Infiltration as a Prognostic Factor in Patients With Colon Cancer
Host-defense mechanisms may have an important role in predicting the outcome of colorectal cancer patients. We designed our study to evaluate the possible prognostic significance of the presence of lymphocytic infiltration (LI) and subgroups of lymphocytes (CD3 and CD20) in the primary tumors. We randomly selected 195 patients operated for colorectal carcinoma from a larger cohort of 1527 patients with colorectal cancer. Histological slides were blindly reevaluated for the presence of LI that was graded 0 to 3. Immunohistochemical phenotyping of the lymphocytes was performed only for tumors with LI score 3 and included ant...

Histology-Driven Therapy: The Importance of Diagnostic Accuracy in Guiding Systemic Therapy of Soft Tissue Tumors
Soft tissue tumors (STTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms accounting for less than 1% of adult cancers. More than 50 different subtypes of STTs have been identified, with this number expected to grow as our understanding of the complex genetic landscape of these diseases improves. As the classification of soft tissue neoplasms continues to diversify, so does the approach to therapy. Accurate histopathologic diagnosis, utilizing the appropriate ancillary immunohistochemical and molecular diagnostic platforms, underpins the oncologic management of soft tissue sarcomas. As increasing numbers of reproducible genetic abnormaliti...

Mediastinal Mature Teratoma With Malignant Carcinomatous Transformation (Somatic-Type Malignancy) With Metastatic Course
We report the case of a 76-year-old patient presenting with an anterior mediastinal heterogeneous mass. Surgical biopsy revealed a solid and cystic lesion filled with hair. Pathological examination showed an atypical papillary epithelial lining without other germ cell tumor or immature teratoma associated. The final diagnosis was a mature teratoma of the mediastinum with somatic-type malignancy (carcinomatous transformation). After 8-month follow-up, subcutaneous and lymph node metastatic lesions of the carcinomatous component were identified. Subtyping of the malignant component within germ cell tumors is an important cha...

Spindle Cell Epithelioma of the Vagina: Report of Two Cases, Literature Review, and New Immunohistochemical Markers
Spindle cell epitheliomas of the vagina are rare benign tumors of uncertain histogenesis. It has been hypothesized that they originate from a pluripotent cell population. Here, we report 2 cases of spindle cell epitheliomas of the vagina. Both patients presented with a painless vaginal nodule. The resected lesions were solid, well circumscribed, and composed of a proliferation of epithelioid or epithelial cells admixed with spindle cells without atypia. The 2 cellular populations expressed epithelial and mesenchymal markers. Based on these morphologic and immunohistochemical findings, a diagnosis of spindle cell epitheliom...

Neuromuscular and Vascular Hamartoma of the Small Intestine: An Exuberant Reparative Process Secondary to Chronic Inflammation
The term Neuromuscular and Vascular Hamartoma (NMVH) was initially coined by Fernando and McGovern in 1982 in their report of 2 cases. Whether this lesion is truly hamartomatous or represents a "burnt-out" phase of varying chronic pathologies has been debated since that time. Examples of NMVH-like proliferations have been reported in the setting of diaphragm disease, Crohn’s disease, radiation, and ischemia. Herein we present the case of a 73-year-old female with partial small bowel obstruction and a past surgical history significant for cholecystectomy and abdominal hysterectomy. A computed tomography scan revealed ...
